The Way Out 2014

Cesta Ven / The Way Out is like a photocopy of a great painting: even if it's not terribly original, it still has something to offer.

This is the portrait of a Roma woman struggling to get by in the Czech Republic. Her family, her friends, the government, the nationals all pressure her to live on the fringes, but she's cursed with the desire to do everything the right way.

This film borrows a lot from other socially aware films that have gone before it (the Ken Loach vibes are strong in this one). It presents a bleak picture of poverty, nationalism, immigration, racism... but what sets it apart from others of this ilk is the incredible performance by lead actress Klaudia Dudová. The film is based around this talented young newcomer and she delivers a striking performance that will leave its mark.
