The Wife 2018

This film left me feeling incredibly frustrated with its wasted potential.

The Wife tries so hard to tell a compelling story about marriage, relationships, writers and writing, but it fails to deliver on all accounts as the script feels overly melodramatic and the plot becomes very predictable very quickly. There are also numerous scenes that drag on and on for no apparent reason, as if the actors were told to delay their lines and just stand there to make the scenes lengthier.

The character the audience is rooting for is definitely, as intended, Glenn Close's, but that's easy when all the other characters are unlikable, even on the verge of unbearable.

So if you want to see Glenn Close acting really well, then sure, go see the movie and tune out everything else.

Phenomenal performance by Glenn Close. Good movie, good message, nothing really spectacular.

Wow, just finished the movie and didn't know what to think. It really hooked me and Gleen Close performance is just impeccable, full of feeling. She is able to show everything with her looks and features, phenomenal. Not a perfect production, but very touching.

Glenn Close's performance outshines the rest of the tepid feeling the movie gave me. I liked Christian Slater in his role too, but I think it could have gone a bit... deeper, ironically enough.

This was a pretty simple, straight forward film, nothing that makes you think too much. But it is enjoyable and it carries an important message about male privilege. Glenn Close is brilliant.

8/10

How spetacular Glenn Close is!
Her eyes during the most simple scenes is something to be contemplate.
That's acting at its finest.

The only reason to watch this movie is Glenn Close. She is a slow burning cauldron and a marvel to watch. Put it on mute and watch her facial expressions - fucking brilliant! Everything else was pedestrian.

the movie poster gave it away: shes the one with the head :D

I was trying to remember the last time I saw Glenn Close in a movie and had to look it up. Man it’s been a long time. It seems to me that when Judi Dench came on scene Glenn Close disappeared but maybe that’s not correct. Either way this is very much a role that I could see Dench playing. Close never quite hit the mark on the character, I felt. I wanted her to be a bit ‘more’ ..more of what I’m not sure. The son character became tiresome and snivelling. An hour after watching now and I think just meh.

Pryce turns in excellent work as 'the husband,' but in her work as an actress and for the sake of her character, it is Close as 'the wife' who should get the lion's share of the credit here.

Amazing, it not hard to follow, pretty simple but effective.

This part was custom made for Glenn Close. She brings a brilliantly nuanced performance, well deserving the Oscar attention. Great premise wonderfully unpacked. I give this film a 7 (good) and Glenn Close a 9 (superb) out of 10. [Drama]

Glenn Close is amazing. Jonathan Pryce is good. The story is fine, a little cliché.

https://trakt.tv/movies/mr-mme-adelman-2017 has the same basic plot as this borefest, but does everything better.
From better pacing, dialogue, authentic and likeable characters, to a much more satisfying and unlazy resolution than asspulling a convenient heart attack to avoid having to work out the "I`m going to leave you" situation

While I have to agree that Glenn Close tries hard to make the best of a shitty script, it was just barely enough to keep me from walking out of the cinema mid screening, even after paying reduced ticket price.
If the premise is of interest to you, your time is much better spent watching the above movie instead.

One of the year's worst.

The movie is pretty slow especially in the first half. The real winner here is Glenn Close with another extraordinary performance.

This film is a slow and beautiful burn.  In the opening scenes you can sense that there is a conflict that is probably neither new nor mild.   During the next 100 minutes you see Glenn Close in an all-time great performance.  It's a shame that there aren't more scripts this good matched with capable actors.  One of the year's best.

Apart from the bits about the self importance of writers and the suffering of the "craft", it was a pretty decent character story.
Takes a bit to get to the point.
