Some scary scenes, but "harry potter" is still harry potter ^^
"Don't go chasing shadows, Arthur."
This movie had a rought start for me. In fact, it is the reason I didn't watch movies for a few days because I wanted to finish this one but just felt so bored. I am glad I got through it because I actually liked the ending, just not something I would want to ever watch again.
This is a good old school spooky movie. It isn't bloody or even mildly gory but it has atmosphere to spare. It really looks good too. I was very impressed by the cinematography.
There were several truly tense moments. It isn't scary really. It just keeps your eyes on the screen as you look for evil lurking in the shadows. Or through an upstairs window. Or in an old graveyard.
It took only a few minutes for me to forget Daniel Radcliffe's history as Harry Potter. His performance here is subdued. Polite even. Claran Hinds is also equal parts kind and mysterious in his supporting role as Mr. Daily. It's worth noting again that this is an old-fashioned thriller. It seems as if it is trying to channel movies like "The Haunting" or "The Uninvited" and I'd say it does a really good job of it.
If I had a complaint it would be that it relied too heavily on jump scares at least in its first half. The movie is too well made to need to rely on that. There were so many jump scares early on that we began to laugh at the seemingly desperate attempt to startle.
Overall though "The Woman In Black" is a classy thriller that mines the moody Horror of the past for its influences.
How did movie Score a 6 Rating.. It's Garbage 1/10 let's just be honest with ourselves
I wouldn't rate it with 1 star, because there are much worse movies in the world, but I wouldn't praise it either. It's very slow paced thriller, that relies mainly on loud volume noises to startle the viewer for frightening effect. It is also hard to accept Harry Potter in role that is not Harry Potter. Overall a mediocre movie.
Very little story with so many jumpscares! I call this mediocre Horror.
Well, someone could have warned me about how terrible this movie was.
Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. Garbage
One could edit this movie into 30 minutes of Daniel Radcliffe just skulking about and looking sad/scared.
USE YOUR WAND, HARRY. Or at least that random axe you found.
booring :/
Great suspense and definitely NOT boring. What a creepy house!
I don't know if I'm just in a movie-loving mood but everything I watch seems underrated at the moment.
I was shown this in school and it's because it was a 12A age certificate at the time, which is so fucking weird considering the movie is not only creepy as shit but is also literally about children dying. It has now been changed to a 15 after countless complaints.
Anyway, I thought this would be one of those movies that I watched when I was younger but later realise is mid but this is genuinely good, and not even that by-the-numbers. The horror itself is fantastic - there's a 20-minute scene midway that's truly panic attack-inducing - and Daniel Radcliffe's stoic and deliberately wooden performance works well with the fully commited gothic backdrop and reliance on scares.
Unlike almost every other horror story going, this one does not allow the protagonist a way out, and he ends up cursed and dead with his young son.
Daniel Radcliffe leads the cast in the atmospheric horror-thriller The Woman in Black. After being sent to a small town to assess an estate, a young lawyer starts to see a mysterious woman in black that is said to be a vengeful spirit that kills children. The writing is pretty strong, and does a good job at weaving the mystery of who the woman is and how to quell her thirst for vengeance. Additionally, the costumes and sets are especially well-done and help to create a creepy and foreboding tone. Full of chills, The Woman in Black is a frightening horror film.
Not scary unless you're very impressionable, somewhat predictable, but in my opinion not as bad as it gets reviewed.
The ending was nice, if a little called
Unfortunately not as good as the book, but still a decent amount of suspense.
I really wanted to like this movie but it didn't work for me. Yeah, it's really atmospheric and oh my, the house was so pretty. It was creepy, but I also thought that it was a bit boring-ish. Radcliffe was great. I guess you can make the movie experience better if you watch this alone at night with lights out and maybe have some popcorn to assist you pass the boring scenes. Last scene was the best.
Because who normally live on the marsh? Probably Shrek the only one? ;)
Excellent movie set. I love the rich architecture. Daniel Radcliffe is amazing in this movie. Interesting and creepy in a way that will make you feel anxious and on edge.
I stll can't get enough of the classic haunted house trope, gothic and all.. Nice ghost story with an ok ending.. Worth seeing
Very atmospheric and nicely made film. I guess the endless nail-biting suspense I felt didn't work for all these people saying "boring", though. It certainly worked for me.
Be sure to watch at night.
It's a boring movie... nothing new but the very last scene... only thing worth watching...
This is a great 3rd feature by the new Hammer. It was good and a few times i noticed i was on the edge of my seat and clenching my teeth. Great Sound design also.
Being a fan of psychological Horror, and without much material to enjoy ( except, off course the master of it; Asian Horror Movies ) i had to forget that i was going to see a movie featuring D. Radcliffe ( no harry Potter Jokes, I just think he´s bad. At least he starts to clean himself of the damn HP role "Radcliffe makes a brave first step away from Harry Potter" - said by Stuart barr / maxrenn @ letterboxd). You have to enjoy this film with the right mod; the right darkness and sound to give you some chills and scares! This wasn't a bluff; the plot is solid ( deserved a better ending though ) good enough performances for it´s genre and excellent psych horror moments. this is the real deal after paranormal activity and 1408!
Turn the lights out. Get you popcorn. make sure all doors are open and you´re alone. volume up to the max. Click Play. Enjoy The Woman in Black.
