Fifteen years passed and it still keeps in tension :)
Wow! I've seen this movie now for the first time in 2016 and I didn't expect it to be that good. Love it!
"Fight The Future" is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, the chemistry between Mulder and Scully is as prevalent as ever. They are two very likable characters and both actors (but to a larger extent Gillian Anderson) are at the top of their games during the long series' run.
The "mythology" is explained in a manner that makes it as clear as it has ever been presented, which means it's now slightly north of pea soup in clarity. The alien menace has gone from mysterious to horrific. They are nasty and not so little, green men. I thought the direction by Rob Bowman made for a nice looking film, but the action sequences were not exactly gripping. Other than the bombing of the federal building, many of the other moments fell flat for me. The agents' break-in at the bee "domes" was unique in its look, but the following chase sequence through a cornfield seemed to go on forever. Mulder's quest to rescue Scully late in the movie was full of spectacular coincidences. How Mulder managed to locate Scully in the massive alien lair is one for the ages. His timely escape from rampaging aliens and the collapsing Antarctic ice shelf is even more amazing.
As an X-Files fan, it is nice to see the show looking so beautiful on the big screen and the Mulder/Scully relationship is as engaging as ever. These things make it a little easier to deal with the fact that this isn't a very good movie.
In my quest to re-watch the whole TV-series, I watched this movie at it's intended place in the line. Between season 5 and 6. The X-Files is still highly watchable, and pretty fun. At least for the fans of the TV-show.
Even though it fits neatly with the series, it's not just an oversized TV episode. Everything is on a grander scale, and it works as a movie. That's more than most movies made from tv-series can say.
As a fan of the series, I can't say how this one come off for the people that HASN'T watched the series, but I have a suspicion it might get a bit confusing. Though...I think most fans of sci-fi would like it none-the-less.

this movie is truly a masterpiece
It's not terrible!
My original review of this film must've been erased by a secret government organization. This film is a pretty The X-Files episode unnecessarily pushed onto and into a grander stage and scale featuring a great deal of filler (and in need of competent editing) that says and adds nothing. Much like the show, this enhanced episode is silly (much of that unintentional), contradicts past episodes and itself, makes little, if any, sense, and plays fast and loose with the rules created for this fictional world.
To be fair, this movie is more a 5 than 6, but my personal nostalgia for the series elevates the score. Don't develop scripts that aren't golden and polished to a shine. 1 in every 1,000 projects heeds that sage advice. I could go on, but why? My words will only be reacted. The ***** is out there!
So the black oil is alien blood, and either when an alien dies it's consciousness partially or fully goes into the oil? Or not at all? And it's also a form of reproduction.
This movie shows the latter at least, but previous instances of the black oil in the show was of the former.
Maybe since in this movie the alien here/alien blood is different from the alien blood in the show, since this movie alien is from tens of thousands of years ago (or millions as it's suggested), and their alien race/alien blood changed, whether organically or purposefully.
In the show, the russian developed vaccine worked against the black oil. The vaccine not working on this aliens blood makes sense then given my above reasonings, since the vaccine is targeted more toward the current versions of the aliens blood, which Scully was infected with from the bee.
Although, maybe the past version of the aliens blood makes the host gestate, and the new version does other effects. It was suggested this was an isolated case.
Or the aliens collaborated with this illuminati/secret government with this fake but effective black oil/an altered version of their blood, and made them focus their/the planets resources on finding a vaccine to that version. Which would then leave them completely open and be swept up by the real version of their bloods effect, that of replacement, rather than colonization. It's a very clever plan.
Rather than trying to remain secret or risk having the planets resources put into defense of their planet and weapons against them, have the humans direct their resources on the course of a vaccine, into medical science.
Have humanity completely distracted in to take over the earth much more quickly. It's genius.
UTTERLY TEASING KISS
Scully is stung by the infected bee, and then what happens?
Ah, it's been a while my old friend, but i knew you would return...
SCULLY ABDUCTION COUNTER... #7.5
The film does feel a bit Mulder centric, with it tapping into his motivations and him being involved with that guy who gave him the initial information. But they should have tapped into Scully's pre-existing motivations too like the death of her daughter.
Solid answers on Samantha. Taken so she could get cloned to eventually help cure her if she was later infected during the colonization.
So the aliens came millions of years ago but some were left behind i guess. And they went hidden or something. Instead of... What? Taking over the planet? Doesn't really make sense.
With Mulder infecting the saucer i do wonder. I mean he could have pulled her out first and then vaccinated her, without infecting the entire saucer. Because the illuminati i imagine were using that saucer to do experimentations and tests and to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccine, and to understand more about the aliens and how to combat them. So there's that moral thing of thinking about what's best in the long term or the short term, or the morally right choice or thinking about the greater good. By destroying the facility it could be the thing that ultimately doomed humanity, for example, because it was a facility we needed or to use. The aliens are much more advanced than humanity, and if they want to wipe us out, then we would have to be very careful in how we conduct ourselves and our defense and our attack.
Although maybe the aliens were letting them use the saucer to help in their preparations or to help with the distraction.
I really dislike how Scully wasn't really aware of the aliens and the saucer. At least Mulder now got solid proof with his own eyes of what he saw, that he's always so desperately wanted.
As for the movie itself, i agree with the criticisms others have said. It's not a very good movie on it's own, as a continuation of the show, it's pretty good, i like it. I like we got answers, i like the Mulder and Scully relationship, i like the x files becoming re-opened. I like the look of the aliens and how vicious these ones are. There's a lot i like and some i dislike, which i've mentioned above. The opening wasn't very good, but i liked the conspiracy stuff. I agree there were quite a few long boring sequences and chase sequences in the film, and Scully should have had more to do later on and not be abducted again, and abducted and infected again at that.
I did like them traveling to various locations, though the production design just didn't feel right, and i think that's because they didn't get much preproduction time on this film.
Skinner was good. Wish he had more to do, but he is a supporting character.
The mythology in the film does feel like adding a bit to the convolution of it, but we've also received some solid answers and leads. I enjoyed it, and i'm still invested in the mythology and conspiracies.
Abducted by aliens, an experiment denies her the possibility of having children, she has had cancer and now has also been infected by a virus. Poor Scully.
Third watch. First time: around early '00s where I rented its VCD Blockbuster, having never seen the series before. Second time: during college breaks in early '10s when I watched most of the first 5 seasons (via an online list of recommended episodes), rewatched the film, then felt it a natural pause point and somehow never got back to it. Now I've slowly made my way through the series since August 2021, all episodes this time, and reached this film again.
At this point the mythology episodes have neared the nonsensical breaking point of how it can feign at expanding itself while often reaching some walk-back gotcha endings (and the surface drama/mystery have decreased a bit in quality as well), so a souped-up version for the big screen has a ceiling limit of interest. That said, the core relationship/rapport/chemistry of Mulder-Scully is developed and executed stronger here than the majority of Season 5's mythology episodes, so it is still a reasonably good time.
The Alien Conspiracy finally comes to light in The X-Files: Fight the Future. Set between seasons 5 and 6 of the television series, FBI agents Mulder and Sully investigate the bombing of a federal building and uncover a sinister plot by a secret cabal to pave the way for alien colonization. Both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson bring their A-game and deliver strong performances. Additionally, several recurring characters from the series stop by for cameos. Some knowledge of the television show is helpful, but for the most part the film does a good job at giving the audience a taste of the series without overwhelming them with too much mythology. Exciting and full of thrills, The X-Files: Fight the Future delivers a compelling sci-fi adventure with aliens, shadowy organizations, and government conspiracies.
It was pleasure to watch the movie. Keeps the tension from the very start up until the end!
Occasionally flawed and it doesn’t always make sense but it’s the best X-Files movie. I Want to Believe was too serious and slow. With Scully not even Mulder’s partner.
Fight for the Future has aliens, conspiracies and the cigarette smoking man. It just screams X-Files and is funner than a lot of the episodes. Especially the reboot episodes.
I just don’t get how they knew one of the thousands of bees carrying an alien virus. Would sting Scully and not Mulder. Since the bad guys were targeting Scully and not Mulder.
Essentially a two-part episode on the big screen, the X-Files film largely works on what made the TV show work - the chemistry and relationship between the two central characters. Whilst the film is a narrative bridge between seasons and there are plenty of cameos and references that would probably make no sense to those not invested in the show, it's clear the filmmakers have also tried to ensure the narrative can be followed by newcomers. Unfortunately, this also leads to quite a few exposition dumps that would only really be appreciated by those following the TV mythology and a plot that has no real narrative resolution given the show was still on-air. Scully's character is also shortchanged in the final act to create tension and give Mulder his motivation, but while there are on screen together, the interplay and relationship between the two agents is tremendous fun.
Excellent movie. It's basically an extended TV episode which ties in to the whole mythology. It has its in's and out's.
An alien type E. T. virus spreads out, careful.
Great movie! If it weren't for the (mediocre at best) special effects at the end of the flick (all the scenes in the alien UFO and when it breaks out of the ice), I would give it even an 8th star.
Story-wise the appearance of Peter Watts (known for the Millennium series) as Special Agent Darius Michaud is a bit strange.
