Through the Fire 2018

Like sex with a drunkard, there's 90 minutes of struggling to reach a quick happy ending.

Making a film about suffering is easy, all you need to do is take a tragic situation (like a fire fighter who's severely burned on the job) and film how difficult it is for him afterwards. It helps if he's married and has children. Twins. Then have at least one person cry in every other scene. Et voilà.

The actors here did a stupendous job (especially Pierre Niney as the lead), but the script has absolutely zero surprises, which makes this film less heroic than the man it's about.

A drama about self-improvement. Fire as destruction, but also as rebirth. The director emphasizes the scenes in which he wants to provoke emotion in the viewer (he also composes the soundtrack). Cinema for a submissive audience. It would have been more interesting to trust Pierre Niney's ability to connect without the need for sentimental underlining.
