tick, tick... BOOM! 2021

All I can say Amazing!!! I got goosebumps watching this. This is a life changing experience. I just turned 18 and I had the same experience I got panic, overthinking and don't know what to do. Growing up is really f*cking scary specially if you haven't made anything in your life anytime you can die. R.I.P Jonathan Larson you made me realize that life is short we need to do something and also to enjoy our life. Fan fact Lin-Manuel Miranda when he saw this musical when he was young it changed his life and this is such an honor for him to make this into Movie.

WOW— SUPERB!! :clap_tone1::clap_tone1: Epic in every sense. Based on a true story (which I never knew about).

Just give Andrew Garfield the Oscar now.

wow.

Andrew Garfield is such a delight to watch! the passing, the direction, the story were amazing. I was captivated by everything, I wasn't familiar with Jonathan Larson's work before but gosh I love this man

I don't enjoy watching musicals that often, especially the ones that are made to be watched on your small(est) screen, but this one kept me intrigued. Loved the acting! It was superb! I loved the dialogues, the lyrics, and oh the music is spot on! I know that sounds weird, but it reminded me of Fleabag? like the premise of it? I don't know. Anyway, I loved this movie and will definitely watch it again!

This was immensely enjoyable, even if melancholy and downright sad at parts. Not knowing the story of Jon Larson really helped with the pacing and reveals. Garfield simply threw himself at this role. He's been on fire lately between this and The Eyes of Tammy Faye. One of the best performances of the year and I'm sure will be nomination worthy come award season. Fans of Musicals and the history of contemporary productions will probably get much more from this too, as I feel many cameos were present that simply went over my head. Fun and energetic but also human, grounded and real, Tick Tick Boom is a toe tapping, emotion evoking ride from start to finish. More great stuff from Netflix.

I always love a good musical film and this is a great one. I actually did not know about all the specifics of Jonathan Larson‘s life and career so this was especially interesting. The musical numbers are beautiful and have huge goosebump-potential. Andrew Garfield delivers a brilliant performance as the late musical writer and I also loved the rest of the cast like Alexandra Shipp and Vanessa Hudgens. Overall I really liked the film and I will definitely watch the movie version of Rent as soon as possible.

Andrew Garfield is SUPERB. We are lucky to have him in this movie.

Went into this one pretty much blind. I'm a fan of Andrew Garfield and I knew it was a Lin-Manuel Miranda directed musical, but that's about it. Luckily, it did not disappoint. I'm probably biased toward the story, as I'm an aspiring creative who is in the same stage of life as Jonathan Larson is in the movie. As such, some elements were very relatable to me. In particular, the final conversation Jon has with his agent really resonated with me in a bittersweet sort of way. The movie does a good job highlighting the messy relationship many creatives have with validation. Overall, I think the movie does justice to the powerful true story it sets out to tell, with creative directing/storytelling, catchy/fun/poignant music, and a stellar performance from Andrew Garfield.

[Netflix] It's smart that the director chose the Jonathan Larson musical as a biopic that wasn't actually a biopic of the author. Based solely on his own aspirations, the monologue was turned into a musical after his death and the success of "Rent" (1996), and spoke of the desire to transcend in life and dreams that seem unattainable. Lin-Manuel Miranda makes for a moving tribute to Larson (a sensational Andrew Garfield) and Broadway, especially with the musical number "Sunday," featuring numerous gentlemen and dames of the theater. "Sunday" was, in fact, Jonathan Larson's tribute to Stephen Sondheim and his musical "Sunday in the park with George" (1984).

This had such a strong start and then I think Lin-Manuel Miranda got a bit lost in all the different ideas he had both for particular scenes and for the tone of the movie as a whole. Needed to be a little tighter and have a stronger identity, but some sequences were truly incredible. The way he juxtaposes the actual play, written by Larson, called Tick Tick… BOOM!, which essentially is about the turbulent period of the playwright’s life represented in the film, with the actual narrative scenes, blending them sometimes so that you can’t quite figure out which belongs to which, works really well. Garfield is amazing as always. Overall, a must watch film of the season and a strong contended for many awards.

Tick, tick.. Boom

Starring an excellent, Andrew Garfield, tick, tick... boom turns out to be a fine musical, based on a true story. In fact, the film tells of the life Jonathan Larson, a composer who died at the age of only 35 years, who composed works, such as "Rent" and precisely "tick,tick.. Boom", mentioned in the film.

The songs are very beautiful, perhaps a little too melodramatic. I liked this continuous past-present time jump, so that any act present in the opera narrated by Andrew Garfield can be best explained.

If you like the genre of musicals, check it out.

7/10

Andrew Garfield gives a brilliant performance as the man behind Rent and the songs are mostly excellent. I didn’t know much about Larson before this but am glad for the opportunity to learn more about his story.

I think I'll have to sit on this one for a while to work out how I truly feel about it. On a positive note Andrew Garfield gave an Oscar worthy performance here but for me the film just didn't really do anything for me. I mean, it was ok but it didn't blow me away like I hoped for. Some of the songs are quite forgettable, (not all but some), however I did lien the fact it was based on a true story.

Garfield, shown from a completely different angle, turned out very well. The uncertainty of the future of the generation X, which is the result of the pursuit of a career and the realization of dreams, is also shown in an interesting way.

Jonathan Larson was a man who reinvented the Musical. You may know his work RENT, the longest running musical on Broadway, but, in this reimagining of an earlier work, Lin-Manuel Miranda play homage to the life of a great artist who’s life ended before his greatest triumph. Great performances (Andrew Garfield, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexandra Shipp and Robin de Jesus shine) spectacular show stoppers (I held my breath through the Sunday number as each character was revealed). This is a don’t miss film for all Theatre geeks and Musical lovers. I give this film an 8 (great) out of 10. [Musical BioPic]

Andrew Garfield should probably be a bigger star than he is https://boxd.it/2DMT8d

I have never seen Rent, I didn’t know about this show and I barely knew who Stephen Sondheim is, so I went into this pretty blind. The film is really good and it is propped up by some inspiring direction by Miranda and an extraordinary performance by Andrew Garfield. If he doesn’t get nominated for Spider-man then surely this will put him over the top.

Second time watching, but I have listened at least a hundred times to the full soundtrack since I had my first watch (my family wishes that that is an exaggeration lmao).

I cried a little at the first watch, but the second one was just me ugly crying for like 25% of the movie from either happiness or being sad. And also screaming the lyrics from the top of my lungs. Such a freaking good movie. I've always adored Andrew Garfield but this movie brought that to a new level. Had no idea he would be such a phenomenal singer but damn, I want him to star in more movies/musicals where he sings please! Alexandra Shipp also has a surprisingly great voice, really enjoyed her sound as well. So much love for this movie and the dedication and passion that was visible in every inch of this movie. Wasn't familiar with Jonathan Larson before this movie and not that into musicals but after this I feel like I have some catching up to do because damn, I have been missing out it seems:)

The music was okay but I just couldn't connect with this movie at all. I think it was the glorification of Bohemian life that I just didn't get into. I just wasn't drawn in.

loading replies

Not familiar with Johnathan Larson or any of his work yet every single song in this movie has brought on so much nostalgia and I have no idea why. Lol. Had to pause it so many times because LIFE but it still managed the keep me interested and engaged throughout. I think that's largely credited to Andrew's amazing performance. But you can clearly see so much heart and soul went into the making of it.

So first movie for 2022..First of all happy new year to everyone. It was a good movie with a superb perfomance which totally deserves an oscar.7.3/10

If you’re not into it after the first 10 minutes, just turn it off, because you’re not going to like it.
It’s a true musical in every sense of the world: everything is extremely (melo)dramatic, and it’s filled with as much overacting and oversinging as you’d expect.
If that’s your thing, this is for you, I really commend Lin Manuel Miranda and Andrew Garfield for going all the way.
But to me it just screams as tacky and inauthentic, there’s a fairytale quality about it that makes me feel icky.
The way it tries to force emotion onto you by spelling out the feelings of every character isn’t very artful, in my opinion.
I was kinda surprised to see Black Thought show up, which is probably the highlight of the film for me, being a fan of The Roots.

It's going to win all the awards. Lin should also direct all movie musicals from now on.

As a huge Rent fan I loved how this movie was the remake of his first successful musical and we were Ble to see this play out and really understand the genius of Jonathan Larson. So many cameos too many to count and it was impressive. I loved this, but you have to be a fan of musicals to really get into it.

Probably my favourite musical, songs are all really good and so is Andrew Garfield

loading replies

I gave up, can't watch musicals

loading replies

Usually, I'm not a big fan of musicals, and I'm not knowledgeable about music overall, but Andrew Garfield really killed it. His ability to convey the struggles and anxieties around a creative process and what not had me hooked.

loading replies

A fairly low score because it just didn't connect for me, i can respect AG performance and the commitment, but.. not for me.

loading replies

I'm definitely a no musical person, i hate them and bored them to death, i will never will see in theater or a movie that i knew it is a musical so telling that i was not so impressed by it. I didn't like the songs they were very blunt, he just made dialogues into songs and try to rhyme them. It had a better view as it was a true story, longer than wanted. Of course great performance by Garfield.
So far the only one i like was La La land and only the second part of that movie

Andrew Garfield's performance in this is a historic landmark for theater kid cinema.

Probably an unfair score from me but it’s just not a genre I enjoy. This was a pick by my wife and it was fine I guess.

Premise - 12/20 - On the cusp of his 30th birthday, a promising young theater composer navigates love, friendship and the pressures of life as an artist in New York City. I'm not a fan of musical theater, but it just came so highly recommended.
Cast/characters - 15/20 - Andrew Garfield was wonderful in the lead role! The surrounding cast, most of which were unknown to me, also played their roles with a lot of tenderness and emotion.
Story - 17/20 - An engrossing watch from basically start to finish! Very well-written.
Dialogue - 13/20 - The musical dialogue did a good job to help with characterization, even though I didn't like all the songs. The non-music dialogue was sometimes a little slow, but not bad.
World-building - 17/20 - Since I came in with relatively little interest, I was impressed by how invested I got in the plight of Jonathan Larson, his friends, and the musical theater industry.

74/100 - 3.5/5 stars - I would recommend this movie to anyone that might be interested in a well-acted, well-written musical drama.

Not really a musical person, but this definitely grew on me.

Not the least because of an incredible performance by Andrew Garfield

I think the setup for the movie was good: we get an actor that is completely invested in the material and a very talented cast. Toss in some good music to tell the story of a man that left us far too young and this should have been a great movie. I liked it but didn't love it and I am not completely sure why. I kept admiring the lead but then two minutes later I was looking at the clock.
