Wendigo 2002

Like most of early 2000s horror films, it suffers from awful editing choices, but honestly I'm downright bewildered by how good this film turned out to be. It seems to get low scores everywhere, even on Shudder, but I thought it was thoroughly enjoyable. It's so mysterious and gripping throughout with a lot of substance to chew on. There's a wonderful ambiguity to the film and it does a very effective job at bringing out a sense of discomfort. The relationships between characters feel so earnest, and the overall mood is just superb. The practical monster effects are pretty sweet considering this was made on a shoestring budget and it's obvious a lot of care and effort went into making this film, and for the most part it pays off. Overall, it's a solid atmospheric slow burn that manages to offer enough originality and demands more attention from horror fans.

I saw this more of an art-house film than a horror. A very slow burner which only picks up at the tale end of the movie. I'd even consider dropping the horror aspect completely in favour of drama/fantasy. Personally, I didn't enjoy it. It was too slow and boring.
