What We Do in the Shadows 2014

i think of it like this: if youre going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more if you knew no one had fucked it.

I did not expect to like this one as much as I did! While I would say that the bucket for vampire movies is getting too crowded, I will certainly not fault an entertaining one for this!
The characters are rather quirky and it's shot mockumentary style (like The Office) which might be off-putting for some but you have at least give them credit for going through a variety of jokes here! Oh, and let's not forget Stu! Everyone loves Stu!

This was pretty funny, it really surprised me in a good way.

I don't think I'm taking it too far by stating that this does for Vampires what "This Is Spinal Tap" did for Heavy Metal bands. It's tough for vampires that are hundreds of years old to live with the drudgery and law enforcement of current times, but somehow this quintet of blood suckers manages. Whether it be by personal slave or a software analyst named Stu, the vampire flatmates keep themselves alive even though they are helpless at nightclubs and on the Internet.

This is a very clever movie, shot documentary-style. There is some gushing blood that is used as a humorous gag a couple of times, but for a movie about vampires, it's surprisingly tame.

A Flight of the Conchords mockumentary inspecting the logistics of the vampire social scene in modern-day New Zealand. I was hoping for better - it seems like it's constantly right on the verge of doing something really hilarious, but can't quite flip the switch. The landscape is ripe for this kind of a satire, too, with so much empty romanticism hovering around the fantasy genre.

Most of the fun comes from picking apart the hallmarks of the bloodsucker game, exposing them for the lame parlor tricks and absurd handicaps they really are. Mystically swapping a plate of noodles for worms, for example, to the mild annoyance of the victim. Failing to enter a night club because the bouncer doesn't explicitly invite them in. In most films, these would be appetizers for the main entree, but in this case there's no second course. This would've made for a brilliant skit on a sketch comedy show, but it just doesn't have the depth for its own feature-length. Even a very short one.

What We Do in the Shadows, a flawless mockumentary in an otherwise flawed world.

This was a funny movie. Anyone who likes odd ball humor will love this movie.

Dry, on the nose, mythological humor.... it's a great movie but who wants to wash dishes.

If you want a new movie comedy concept, it is worth checking out. Very funny indeed

This movie was a great comedy! I usually don't laugh at comedies but this gave me some great laughs.

We're Werewolves, not Swear-Wolves

Hilarious comedy with a laugh around every corner. Some of the quotes from this film are going to stay with me forever and further shows how fantastic Taika Waititi's filmography is.

Definitely a new and interesting take on the undead. Definitely a must-watch for horror-comedy fans!

Watching What We Do in the Shadows (2014) makes me want to become a vampire just so I can have friends that won't judge me for staying up all night and sleeping all day #VampiresNeedLoveToo

Um, I hit the main artery.

I laughed and laughed in this scene. Hilarious! I did not expect to like this film.

loading replies

Not sure why I took so long to watch this. It’s surprisingly charming and funny despite the documentary style taking some getting used to.

loading replies

I think it was good, but I can't recall the last hour and a half.

loading replies

So bad hope the series is better

loading replies

The movie starts loose, but it recovers making itself entertaining although with quite highs and lows.

I have forgotten the contents of this movie.

loading replies

One of my all time favourite movies.

loading replies

A mockumentary at its best. Think Reno 911 with Vampires.... Watch and enjoy.

loading replies

Unwatchable. I can't believe I wasted the ten minutes it took me to shut it off.

loading replies

I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. Absurd & original. I loved it. So good.

loading replies

Good looking, no much substance, rather disappointing.

loading replies

Overrated movie that I ve seen in a while

loading replies

This is the best vampire movie. If you disagree, you're wrong.

loading replies

This is hilarious and endlessly quotable. We need more unique movies like this.

loading replies

So I'm late to the show on this one and decided to watch it as it showed up suggested in Amazon Prime.

I was pleasantly surprised at how quirky and funny this movie was.

loading replies

Only genius people can come up with this idea of having a documentary about local New Zealand Vampire creatures.

This movie is so friggin hysterical. Watched it July 1, night of the FOTC show in SB. I saw this last year but admittedly was a bit tips so I didn't remember much. Now I'll never forget it. Hysterical!!!!

loading replies

I love the idea. It's so great. It would be the perfect tv show! The actors are awesome. There's gags, gags, gags all over. It's like watching a vampire reality show. And even the saddest moments in this movie are SO funny.

Original and funny, surprised in a nice way

loading replies

I think... it was good? I forgot the contents of this movie.

loading replies

Think my expectations were a bit too high for the movie but it was alright. I watched it without subtitles so i may have missed some jokes. If the whole movie was like the last 30min it would have been better

loading replies

I'm a sucker for the TV series so I had to check out the movie it's based on. It's like a parallel universe of the series with similar characters but a lot of changes. I'd say it's equal with the best episodes of the show! Not only is it the best vampire satire I know but it also feels like a fresh take on the genre with a bunch of clever ideas. Well-written, superb story direction, great dialogue, the jokes are hilarious, a bunch fun and the characters grow on you. The fourth wall breaking, the fakeness and the documentary style all work to it's advantage and creates great satirical comedy. This is how you do it!

I'm just sad there's no Colin Robinson!

One the best vampire movies ever made.

loading replies

Incredibly original and hilarious. Who wouldn't watch a documentary on a group of vampire flatmates and their nighttime charades?

loading replies

Firstly I was put off watching, believing it was a silly American spoof comedy, but it’s actually a New Zealand mockumentory shot in Wellington. Watcht can you correct your info? Very funny and enjoyable & comparable with The Office. Although the tv series is based in USA, not NZ, I hope it doesn’t detract from the brilliance of the original film.

The movie is a nice comedic mockumentary that focuses on vampires and how they live their lives on a day-to-day basis. It is funny, and the acting was pretty good. I was sold on Taika being a quirky vampire that wants to live his best vampire life.

It is not spooky, but the effects are pretty good, and honestly, it is a fun watch, so I was not left disappointed by the lack of horror but highly satisfied by the comedy and acting. I know for a fact that this will have an even bigger cult following in the future, and hopefully, we get a sequel that's just as good as this one even though, from what I've heard, the sequel is supposed to be based on werewolves but with Taika involved I know it is in good hands.

I might check out the show since I loved the movie, but I know it's not going to be the same.

Definitely, a must-watch not just for horror fans but also for people who love comedies or just looking to watch a movie to enjoy and have a good laugh.

The jokes were like vampires: pretty old and not as funny as I'd like.

What We Do in the Shadows has the Spinal Tap feel without all the Spinal Tap laughs, though it certainly is a pleasant watch.

"I think of it like this. If you are going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more if you knew no one had f*cked it."

I was afraid this movie was going to be over-hyped because over the past few years people told me it was the best thing since sliced bread. Well I have to say - I love it. If you like The Office style humor, then this is for you. Now I need to watch the Tv show which I hear is awesome too.

Surreal smokes to normalize the life of a pathetic vampires

Really funny and enjoyable movie.
I did not expect to be so comical, and it remembered me a lot of The Office

"Leave me to do my dark bidding on the Internet!"
"What are you bidding on?"
"I'm bidding on a table..."

Possibly the greatest joke in the history of cinema.

I love the intelligent humor that this movie offers, I watched the movie several times and every time I discover some punchline that I've missed before, probably during laughing too hard. Although my wife hates the movie and think it is stupid because of the total lack of common sense I think it is a piece of art. If you are the fan of Monty Python you will love this movie, definitely watch it! 10/10 from me!

loading replies

After seeing the series, you can definitely see that the movie was less polished. Still a recommendation though

Seemed like a drawn out sketch show idea. The jokes along the way weren't funny.

A documentary crew gets access to a group of vampire flat-mates based in Wellington, New Zealand. We follow their day to day lives and exploits.

Put simply, What We Do in the Shadows is 90 minutes of sustained hilarity in the form of dry humour, fresh ideas and character-based comedy. Clement and Waititi never let the idea get old, which is no mean feat.

The camera doesn’t waver as we see the group go about their business. That ranges from sitting down in a flat meeting discussing who washes the dishes, to biting someone the wrong way and panicking as blood shoots out across the room. It’s all put on the same deadpan plane, which makes the whole film a bizarre experience.

What We Do in the Shadows had me laughing so hard I had to pause the tape on a few occasions. It’s not for everyone but the surreal, socially awkward characters seen through the unflattering lens of a documentary struck a chord. One of the funniest films I have seen in a very long time.
