Why Don't You Play in Hell? 2013

Like a well-oiled manga machine, it works but there are too many movie parts for it to go smoothly.

A group of amateur filmmakers are recruited to make an epic film for a yakuza family. It's so far over the top it's funny.

Eh. Thought there would be more action. This is just a joke of an action movie. Silly plot.

Oh man! I was really excited to see this so this but it didn't live up to my expectations. Sono has made some really great films but the buzz for this one was so good I just wanted too much. It's still a fun movie about 35mm film and filmmaking though. And don't forget to brush your teeth.

Splatter comedy that sees an amateur film club stumble into the conflict between two yakuza gangs. Despite the silly premise, this is one of the last (if not the last) Sion Sono's masterpieces before his downfall in the last decade. It's just a grotesque parody of yakuza movies, but the approach is again lavishly post-modern - in a "Kill Bill" kind of way to draw an easy comparison. The tight editing and perfect casting choice also give a big bump to the film. The first half might be a little slow, but once the two storylines converge, it quickly escalates to a cathartic climax. I even ended up tearing up for some unknown reason during the scene with the cast reuniting at the end.
