Being a teenager at church camp sucks. Good performances by Natalia Dyer and Timothy Simons
Great film. Natalie Dryer's facial expressions stole the show: she would do well on The Office. The villains in this movie had me so genuinely mad. It was quite an achievement.
In skimming some of the reviews of this movie I think that some people became a little too focused on the details and may have missed the bigger message. Were parts of the movie wrapped up into neat little (implausible) packages? Surely they were. I haven't seen AOL chat since You've Got Mail. A couple of the scenes where she eavesdropped on others were a little too conspicuous. I suspect the director chose these simplistic deliveries to make the movie a little more accessible and to keep the run time down to a tight 84 minutes. Once again, those scenes were only tools to the bigger message.
While much of the movie was simplistic I think that it did something that is extremely hard to do: it dealt with the sensitive topic of religion in a way that was not too heavy-handed. Full disclosure: I am a humanist and an atheist. I think part of the human experience is just that - being human and experiencing all that we can. As the woman in the bar neatly says, we're all just trying to figure out our s***. I feel sorry for those that never get the full experience because they are looking upward. The film also did a great job of exposing the hypocrisy of so many of those that tell us what the invisible man in the sky wants from us while not walking that walk themselves.

Good movie. Feels similar to Eight Grade in tone and subject matter (although not as good).
It's well directed, and the acting & casting is phenomenal - everyone acts like an awkward Catholic high-schooler. Critical of the hypocrisy of religion without being too overtly anti-religious.
Overall, worth a watch if you have an hour.
The comparisons to Saved will be numerous, but that's likely just because there aren't a ton of Jesus camp/school comedies out there (which kind of blows my mind because there's so much material that could be mined). This quick, little film has a lot of funny moment AND points out the hypocrisy & gaslighting that is standard practice in too many christian settings. I loved it, but at the same time had a few too many PTSD flashbacks to my own church camp experiences, reminding me again why I ran so far away from all that. Christian or not, there's a ton to like here and you'll probably only dislike it if your identity is a little too tied up in your evangelical belief system.

Actually quite an honest depiction of the uneven balance between trying to stay true to God and trying to come to terms with sexual desires. Its funny, provocative, and insightful.
Things I liked: Netflix's Everything Sucks vibe; cool use of music/lyrics in somes scenes... This would be a comedy version of the miseducation of Cameron Post? No way. I believe my wife loves the same scene from Titanic.
Sobering, endearing, and downright comedic. Yes, God, Yes might just be one of my favorite films I've seen this year! Stellar performances from the cast and an amazing script to back it up. It says in 76 minutes what many movies struggle to do in 120. I don't think there's an excuse not to give this movie a try and bust your gut open laughing
It's decent and Natalia Dyer does a good job in the lead role but it doesn't really have anything that makes it stand out. These kinds of coming-of-age stories exist in multitudes.
Imho this had too much "normalized sex" in it. If she was really brought up firmly catholic she would have behaved a lot more reluctantly in many of the scenes. Same goes for other people in the camp; eg. giving head in places where they can easily be spotted or the Father jacking-off without any precautions..?
Another big miss for me to have her "adult life-guidance scene" in lesbian bar... I'd assume a catholic camp in this period would be far away from a place like this, nor would there be such a big local scene... felt more like forced progressiveness.
Also the hairy arms on Wolfgang Novogratz... so unnaturally fake that I have no idea what the thought process was. Were they afraid it wouldn't show in the light?
Good film!
Led by the likeable Natalia Dyer, 'Yes, God, Yes' is a fairly amusing and entertaining watch. It's pretty straightforward and there aren't any thrills or anything, but it is a competently made film that doesn't overstay its welcome; 78 minutes well spent. Dyer is very good, as I knew she would be - I'm a fan of her from 'Stranger Things'. Worth a watch.
Natalia Dyer stars in Yes, God, Yes, a rather lackluster and dull coming-of-age film. The story follows a young high school girl named Alice who’s coming into sexual maturity and goes on a religious retreat looking for answers, but finds that most of her peers aren’t practicing what they preach. Dyer gives a fairly decent performance but the rest of the cast is pretty weak. And for some reason it’s told as a period piece set in the early 2000s, with AOL being Alice’s gateway to internet sex education. Also, it just does a poor job at discussing religion and sex – building a strawman argument. Yet while Yes, God, Yes has its problems, it’s addressed some interesting issues that teens deal with.
It gets some points from me for not holding back on the exceedingly high levels of hypocrisy that stem from Christians. But other than that it's just an average movie.

Shame for the evangelical teen set, Yes, God, Yes is like shaving my balls with a lady razor: I don't see this kind of thing every day, but it was pretty much what I expected.
The description alone makes this movie unwatchable. And I'm not talking about the fact that using an AOL chat to tempt someone into masturbating is highly unlikely (are there really people under the age of 50 using those?)
