A gorgeous and haunting horror drama with an unexpected level of emotional heft. The film expertly combines emotional family drama with eerie Irish folklore and tackles the subject of mental health in a sensible and effective way. Very impressive, especially for a first feature. It aims for emotion more than scares, though there are some good ones, and combine it with such an effective atmosphere of creeping dread that reels you in deeper and deeper. The emotional resonance really hits thanks to the compelling characters and storytelling. Performances are exceptional across the board, but special mention must go to Hazel Doupe. Overall, I'm very impressed by this, plus taking place during Halloween season is always a plus.
As the daughter of a mother with bipolar disorder, this was a brutal watch. So I guess be forewarned that the horror definitely comes from the mental illness aspect -- the supernatural aspect very much seems like just a metaphor for the reality of such a horrible mental illness, how it can be passed down, and how it affects the family around them, especially the children.
A bleak and oppressive movie that doesn't explain the strange happenings that affect Char. With its abstract plot, it is rather unsatisfying, although it still manages to hold the attention with its overall sense of mystery.

Really enjoyed 90% of the film, maybe it's me getting older but I'm just not impressed with how movies are being concluded these days. Loved the story, the Irish sentiment, abstractly tackling mental health, acting was good though. A solid enough movie for directors debut film
