There's more than one way to lose your life to a killer
Based on the actual case files for one of the most intriguing unsolved crimes in America, "Zodiac" tells the story of a serial killer that terrified the San Francisco Bay Area, taunting police with his ciphers and letters. The case becomes an obsession for four men as their lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues.

The story of Zodiac is compelling in itself. Add in some great performances by Robert Downey Jr, Jake Gyllenhaal and Mark Ruffalo and you have an extremely interesting film. In particular Jake Gyllenhaal's chacter's journey from interest to obsession draws into th wworld of Zodiac.

I suppose the only other thing to say given his performance in this film is 'when is Mark Ruffalo going to make a Columbo film?'

Great movie although it takes a little long to get going: Graysmith is a cartoonist when the first Zodiac murder occurs. Over the time he gets more an more obsessed with helping the police (and solving the case himself when the police doesn't try anymore).

Zodiac was a well-made, but ultimately not very thrilling, crime drama. The characters are uninteresting and thrown aside in favour of the story, a series of events which sometimes feel like reading a journal because of the constant time skips. I know that the story's scope is pretty large, but despite the film's length, it still isn't able to concentrate much on any of the events before necessarily moving on. This would have worked much better as a TV series, as it would have allowed for each incident to be explored in more detail and the gaps between them to feel less awkward.
