What a bait and switch. They have you thinking "oh, cool, Palmer's going to be in this season from the start!", and even his brother returns. But, nope! Dead in the first 5 minutes! Michelle, too... I assumed Tony was going to die, actually.
Oh god, this Derek kid is already too much. Do we really need to keep him around?? Not off to a great start on that front.
I wonder why, in the previous season, they bothered making the point of having President Keeler survive the plane crash. He clearly never reclaimed office. I guess that maybe they didn't know where they would want the plot of S5 to go, so they left the door open in case they decided to bring Keeler back instead of continuing with Logan.

This episode pulls no punches and kills off 2 main characters: Michelle Dessler, who first appeared in season 2, and more shockingly, in the first 5 minutes no less, David Palmer.
Even when rewatching the show, it takes some time to sink in that Palmer is really dead. It was a ballsy move to kill off an original character in such a way but it pays off massively because it kicks off the plot of the season tremendously and hooks you on what's happening from the start.
Death of beloved characters is the essence of a successful series. what an intense pilot episode.
Simply outstanding. A phenomenal game changer.
