The final episode of the series, wherein it is demonstrated without a doubt that the young doctor's morphine addiction is greater even than his professed love for Lady Natasha.

When Lady Natasha's train is ambushed by the Bolsheviks, the young doctor has to make the choice between saving morphine (which the train is carrying) or saving Lady Natasha. To the bitter remembrance of his older self, the young doctor chooses to go for the bottles of morphine, even if it means watching poor Lady Natasha burn to dead and hear her dying shrieks. It is then that the young doctor admits to himself that he is no more than a morphine addict.

At the end of the series the young doctor is transferred back to the city, while the old doctor returns, sorrowfully, to the forgotten tomb of the nurse who loved him, in that hospital in the middle of nowhere.

The wisdom we obtain through the consequences of our sins sometimes comes too late for those who love us most.
