It's a tough needle to thread, maintaining a lighter tone in a show like this without shying away from the discomfort – or even despair – engendered by the issues it tries to engage with. I think All Rise does as well as possible so far, and I hope it survives its freshman season. Also, Marg Helgenberger's wardrobe is flipping unreal. It would have been a delight for her to pop up every episode just because, y'know, she's Marg Helgenberger, but those outfits are taking it to a whole 'nother level. All the props to Janelle Nicole Carothers, who as far as I can tell, is the costume designer on the show.
