[8.2/10] This is a great, high-concept episode. The idea of a drug (er, egg) that has people give into their deepest wants is really fun, particularly when unleashed on the already seemingly uninhibited gang from Archer. Learning that Ray’s dream is to write a Hamilton-style musical about the Teapot-Dome scandal, or that Cyril’s is to just do nothing and not get yelled at, or that Pam’s is to finally get to be a leader is all great. The show takes these things to their naturally absurd comic endpoints.
It helps that the cause of all this is a little living leftover “sandwich” that Archer gets attached to, Babou-style. Its constant supply of eggs, and people trying to decide whether to eat them (or in Krieger’s case, experiment with them), is a good source of humor throughout. And bits with references to famous bridge-makers or other historical scandals and what an “intermezzo” are is the sort of hyperliterate humor I love from Archer.
It’s also a good Archer/Lana episode. We haven’t really gotten many of those since the dream seasons started, so it’s nice to get a bit of a mini-interlude (or intermezzo, if you will) about their relationship, the things that bring them together, and the things that make them kind of a mess as a couple. This season has had a lot of reversion to the old Archer, and there’s something interesting about the show exploring just how much of a dick (albeit a self-aware one) he can be.
Still, this is mostly high concept fun, with Cheryl in particular being enjoyably weird, and the whole starvation desperation thing leading a surprising number of good gags. Plus it has the return (and just as quick departure) of Brett!
Overall, this one felt like a classic Archer episode that just happened to be transposed onto a spaceship, which is fine by me!
