Barbarians 2020

I love that the romans are speaking actual latin the entire time. It sounds amazing.

Okay. So I just started watching this. And actually as already pointed out... the Romans speak latin and the barbarians speak German. Given the setting is in Germania this is pretty appropriate. If you don't like subtitles then fair enough but in terms of accuracy this is all spot on. First episode has begun to hook me. I love all things Roman (and ancient Greek) but that's because I studied it at uni. In terms of authenticity so far I would say it's not bad. Certainly not cheesy so far. And not hollywoodified nonsense. So let's see... I have popcorn at ready and guess I will blast through this to give my score! EDIT: Okay I've blitzed through this. Quite enjoyable. Hovering between 7 or 8 but I think I'll be generous and give an 8. It's pretty cool for what it's trying to do. V watchable. Prob not quite an 8 but equally definitely not a 7. This one deserves to at least be trialed. Your mileage may vary but I've watched 6 episodes in 2 sittings and would very much welcome a season 2.... so make of that what you want!

This derives heavily from the shows Vikings and Game of thrones but I found it very enjoyable.
But I'm not chiming in the quire praising the show for the Romans speaking Latin as I think that's a novelty at best and the show wouldn't have been any worse had everyone simply spoken German (not a German speaker myself).
After all no one seems to have a problem with people speaking unaccented German at least half a millennia before the language even started to take its current form.

Oh look, a comment that isn't obsessing about the language.

It's a pretty good show. There is nothing obvious wrong with it. But I'm kind of missing the kind of emotional involvement that you get with the truly great shows. Still worth a watch though.

A german show in which actually not everyone speaks german (romans speaking latin) - love it!

Its also generally nice to see german shows which are not just barely watchable in general :)

German show, shame gonna skip it

It was an open-ended cancellation, I wish we could have seen the rest.

Looks OK but just can’t be bothered, it’s yet another Netflix subtitle-fest. If I want to read, I’ll read a book!

I really can't understand why this show doesn't have a better rating. It's amazing, almost as good as other great series as Game of Thrones and Vikings. I'm guessing it's because it isn't in english and people from countries with english as a native tongue don't like to watch great productions that suppose an effort from them. Well, the rest of the world is pretty used to it, and it's amazing to be able to enjoy this masterpiece.

Please, give it a shot.

Really fu*king good. I didn't expect it to be that good. Quality. Gave it 8/10 because there's always room for improvement, it can be a 9/10, but I doubt it can be perfect, very few series can be that. When I give a series 10/10, that last number is purely subjective, it's because it found a place in my heart, so 8/10 is really fu?king good.

Enjoyed first season, but halfway through second and feel like ending it.

I was a bit disappointed by this show. Some of the dramatisation is too much and very odd how people are just randomly killed but some survive just to add to the drama (unnecessarily as I find).
The end was rather weird I would say even though the first episode was interesting, everything after got worse.
Interesting concept though. Being Austrian I was obviously able to understand the Barbarians. Latin subtitle translations were interesting. Though using Latin for the one, but then modern German for the others was weird. Something that is definitely a bit distracting is the fact that the Romans speak Latin with an Italian accent haha

This is a very good series. I love watching German shows in German (I grew up in Austria). This way I can also avoid "reading" a movie, except this time it still could not be avoided because the Romans spoke Latin. Oh well, a minor inconvenience.

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!

This 1st season, just have one problem. Only 6 episodes :'(

It starts off awkwardly but it finds its footing somewhere between episodes 2 and 3. The characters aren't the most compelling at first either but once the story picks up the pace and their motivations are fleshed out, it's a good enough mix to get you to watch the final 3 episodes in a row.

Great series, Latin spoken by the Romans and German for the barbarians is very effective. I watched the English dubbed version on Netflix and it is also very watchable.

It is great to see European filmed and acted tv series getting airtime on English Netflix. As the quality of acting and storyline are very compelling in this, Money Heist and some Scandinavian series too. Keep them coming!

A lot of reviews on this show seems to be negative but I enjoyed it. I guess all the negative reviews are from people who want the history to be told exactly how hit happened. This is not a documentary or docudrama.

It was an enjoyable show from entertainment perspective. I would recommend watching this show if you are not too worried about the writers getting the history exactly correctly.
