[7.5/10] I liked this one. Gene episodes are often a sturggle, but I enjoyed the core theme of this one -- that Gene can be a little much, and that’s okay, but they just need to find the right outlet for it. What I enjoy about this one is that it’s as much a Linda episode as it is a Gene episode. Her support for Gene is unconditional, and that blinds her to some harsh realities of the world. But her speech that she’d still be his biggest fan even if she weren’t his mom is really sweet.
I also like Gene’s routine here. The show does a nice job of making his “extra” approach to everything a poor fit for his role as “Quiet Eli.” His reversion to being placid after he finds out what Linda did to get him the part is amusing in a “Troy and Abed being noooor-mal” sort of way. And while his saving the play with his antics is a little contrived, it works well enough in context.
Plus I love of all the comic side dishes here. The low-key spoof of a Tennessee Williams play is fantastic. Teddy’s failed attempts to woo the theater’s accountant are a laugh. Tina and Louise’s quest to sell tickets so that they can revel in the joy of poking their dad’s “love handles” is a bizarre but amusing side plot. And the elderly saying that they hope this isn’t the type of play where people come down the aisles and meow at you had me in stitches.
Overall, a nice Gene and Linda episode with some really fun comedy on the side.

I love the squeak that Bob makes when being poked at the rear :joy:
