[8.9/10] Such a funny episode. The A-story sees Tina joining a junior lifeguard squad in order to, what else, hang with shirtless boys, but commit to doing the job right after she brings the whole squad down.
On the surface, this is a pretty standard “misfit rises to the challenge” story, but what I liked about it from a plot perspective is how Bob’s Burgers subverts that kind of story while still hitting its beats. Tina interpreting the old man telling her to quit as him telling her to stay in the game, or the head lifeguard only letting her “squad” graduate out of a fear of her exposing his incompetence is a funny way to riff on the usual beats of that type of story.
Plus, it’s just funny. Tina’s general lackluster lifeguarding, her efforts to concoct a love triangle with one of the boys, and her general enthusiasm-without-talent approach definitely brought the laughs, in that endearing preteen misfit sort of way.
The B-story is, as usual, a little slight, but still hilarious as comic relief. The restaurant starts offering wifi and Sgt. Bosco drops buy to snag a hacker operating out of it. There’s not much to it, but there’s still loads of laughs in it, with Louise’s usual hilarious smart remarks, Linda’s overcommitting and being sad that everyone’s too immersed in their screens to hear her colorful remarks, and Bob being mildly perturbed but tolerant of all of it as usual. Minimal story, but maximum laughs.
Overall, another fun and laugh-worthy outing from what’s proving to be a great season.
