Nothing really new if you've even remotely heard about that. And I feel it's pretty common in news and movies.
However it did not evoke other common possibilities for the reason we haven't found or haven't been found by extraterrestrial life.
The religious one. We are unique because created by God. (Which is obviously immediately disproven by the simple fact that there are different religions even on Earth, but still, lots of people believe that.
The physics one. Maybe intergalactic (or even real interstellar) travel is just physically impossible. (Though maybe not for an artificial intelligence that would not have life's time constraints).
The pessimistic one. Every civilization destroys itself before reaching the space age. As we are most likely to do.
The Matrix one. Our universe is a simulation that just haven't been programmed with other life. The fact that we can see but can't reach other stars is just lazy programming.
The real alien one. Other forms of life are so alien to us that we can't recognize them, or maybe even detect them with our senses and instruments.
