I think Dude had given up because he used to be the only game in the area, and now he was surrounded by Pep Boys, Discount Tire and Auto, and other Big Box auto shops, and, he just figured he couldn't compete, or didn't know how to compete, so, he just sat at his desk in the corner, spiting chaw juice on the floor and saying woe is me, and being satisfied with whatever scraps he could get. Jesus, if I was a potential customer, one of the first things you do is check the customer bathroom to see if they maintain it. That bathroom looked like something out of a crackhouse. I would've just turned around and left to never return.
