[7.4/10] Wonder Woman has a friend! This episode has a bit of a different feel than the usual Justice League outing, but I like that as a change of pace. There’s something pretty entertaining about the show pulling a Roman Holiday with Wonder Woman and her new friend (a princess named Audrey no less!). Most of it’s pretty insubstantial, but that’s OK. It’s just there to build up a rapport between the two of them, with Diana’s strait-laced naivete and Audrey’s carefree party girl mentality. It’s a bit stock, but it works to quickly establish a friendship between them.
(As an aside, it’s also a surprisingly innuendo-filled episode. There’s nothing untoward, and I’m not complaining, but I’m surprised that the “go out with a bang” exchange and sapphic undertones of the whole thing made it past the Cartoon Network censors.)
I also appreciate this as a subtle escalation of the Diana/Bruce romance. The two having a Batman Returns-style sashe on the dance floor was enjoyable, and Batman “waiting up” for Diana after he night with Audrey was charged and vaguely flirty, or at least what passes for flirty from The Dark Knight. Giving the two of them an adventure together is a good move.
I’m less enamored with Vandal Savage and the whole conspiracy threat. He’s been a pretty generic villain in the show so far, and his plan to marry into the royal family to do some dastardly deed is bog standard bag guy stuff. What’s more, I know I’ve talked about how arbitrary which things in a superhero show seem silly and what I take for granted can be, but I found Colonel Vox, with his Baron Underbheit-looking voice box and sonic ray vocal powers to be pretty darn goofy.
Still, a bit of palace intrigue and outer space hold ups mean the more adventuring side of things has something at least a little promising. I’m most interested to see how Diana’s friendship with Audrey is going to affect how things move forward with Audrey assuming the throne and marrying Savage. We’ll have to see!
