Yeah, staying stock-still after being splashed with (presumably) acid is totally the expected thing to do. Not like you'd involuntarily flinch away and try to get rid of whatever was causing you pain. Same as stopping your bike right in front of on-coming traffic. Totally reasonable.
I bet if they touched something burning hot, they would just stay grabbing onto it. Or if they cut themselves, instead of trying to staunch the blood flow, they'd just blindly look at it.
I get wanting to create drama, but it's really not that hard to tweak events slightly to make them realistic and believable.
