Over the last few seasons, Modern Family has been on an auto pilot, writers either recycling or coming up with a variation of "it's funny because of misunderstandings" theme.
This episode, while not among the very best, breaks from that tired mold and reminds us why so many people love the show in the first place. The heart.
Modern Family's core theme has been despite all the differences, they are family and to them, nothing is greater than family. And it's our desire and longing to belong to such family that separates this show from many "modern" shows.
Sadly, not all the elements come together to support that core message. But it was still lovely to see a glimpse.
