[4.4/10] This was pretty rough. I like the theme of pressuring young kids with massive expectations and thereby screwing them up, but the show didn’t get much good out of it. All the flashbacks/flashforwards were pretty on the nose. The multi-cultural “go back to where you came from” meeting had a solidly subversive presence, and some decent banter, but felt like it never quite got around to articulating the point it was trying to make or nailing the comedy down.

Similarly, I loved the premise of the “basketball recruiters recruit little kids” but there was zero energy to the sketch, and all the gags were one-note. I know David Cross’s fart jokes were meant to be a sort of meta-parody of that kind of humor, but it just got to be tiresome. And the only funny thing about Odenkirk’s follow-up was the amusingly contrived sitcom scenario in which his talent for flatulence would be useful.

Overall, very few laughs in this one, and some clever premises that were squandered.
