CBS spins off their popular movie mystery series Columbo into a 5-episode premier season of Mrs. Columbo. Wife of LAPD’s Lieutenant Columbo, Kate Columbo is your typical suburban housewife who cleans house, raises a young daughter, has a part-time job with a weekly paper, and solves the occasional murder on the side. The show pretty much follows the Columbo formula with a few little tweaks; Kate stumbles across a murder through the course of her newspaper job or recreational activities, befriending the murderer, and uncovers clues and solves the crimes through follow up interactions. And of course Lieutenant Columbo is always somewhere off screen (mentioned but never seen). Kate Malgrew is pretty good as Mrs. Columbo, though not quite as described in the original series (not that they’ve ever been sticklers about continuity). The tone is a lot more lighthearted, and the plots are condensed down and thinned out to meet a one hour runtime. Yet while it’s kind of a fun lark, Mrs. Columbo is a rather mediocre ‘70s television mystery series.
