Peacemaker

Season 1

Stupid and fun, yet charming and heartfelt as the bombastic shenanigans from The Suicide Squad continue! The most James Gunn that James Gunn has ever been!

If you wanted another inappropriate superhero show after Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn. Then this is for you.

Not bad. I really enjoyed this fun and super pulpy TV series from James Gunn. I know quite a couple of Snyder trolls who were throwing shade at Gunn for making something that didn't take itself seriously and you know what, I usually prefer a show when it knows exactly what it is. Some fun and heartfelt moments that are very akin to Gunn's superhero traits (seen in both of his franchises) but we also get some good old Jame Gunn being hard-R and cult-film like (probably the most batshit I've seen him since his first two films). Anyways, we're headed for a busy spring on TV but this made the winter bearable and I'm glad it'll be getting a second season. Also, not trying to stir anything, but I do prefer this over the Marvel shows (I love anything that feels like the result of a filmmaker's aesthetic and although there are glimmers of that in both WandaVision and Loki, this is very much James Gunn's work). Solid, worth a watch.

The first couple of episodes didn't completely work for me but by the end I was fully in love with the cast and characters, the tone, the overall mood, the plt and the action. This is way better than any MCU show, apart maybe from Loki.

What looks to be just to be a ‘dumb’ action series with lots of gore and stupid jokes quickly turns out to be so much more. The emotional journey of the team and sometimes tragic backstories give so much more depth to the characters. Not for everyone but I really enjoyed it.
Well done James Gunn!

At first, I didn’t really care for the show after watching its first few episodes. It took me a couple of weeks of putting it off to finally get back into it and when I did I ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would.

The pacing of this series killed me. This could've been done in 5 or fewer episodes. And in a less contrived way. So many half-assed jokes, and arguments/decisions to create fake tension. Jesus!

Also, Vigilante was so wasted after episode 4.

So both Bat-Mite and Green Arrow exist in the DCEU? Interesting...

Overall had a good time with it. I think Gunn’s style needs more refining in some areas, but there are also a lot of very strong moments where I think he just nails it in execution and how it was written.

Peacemaker’s character arc as a whole is just well done, and the side characters were charming and quirky, and I ended up caring about them quite a bit. The series had a unique tone and both the goofy and the dark parts enhanced the overall experience.

Makes me eager for the DC Universe he’ll start next year, I think he’s my favorite director and writer when it comes to superhero stories, even if his storytelling here and there can be improved.

“Peacemaker” is as dumb as a mid-budget redneck superhero TV show can possibly get. Despite the jokes being somewhat hit or miss, John Cena’s character can be surprisingly likable, and not just in a guilty pleasure kind of meaning. Things get particularly good in the middle when some proper team-building with the supporting cast starts to happen. I mean, they even get us to like two minor characters from "The Suicide Squad" I don't even recall seeing.

The action sequences are short but impactful, something in between a horror invasion B-movie and the gorefest we have already witnessed in “The Suicide Squad”. Despite the numerous DC references, the show is actually closer to Gunn’s early material: both the countryside setting and the Butterfly menace instantly reminded me of “Slither”, and so is the overall low-budget feeling.

The family issues and psychological bits felt a little rushed, but maybe there will be more space for that in the next seasons? (I highly doubt it)

Ding dong b*tches!

This was so weird and fun… It’s awesome. I can’t believe John Cena managed to make me enjoy something where he’s the lead actor. Seemed just as impossible as an eagle hugging a person.

S1 is awesome! Great cast (John Cena is top notch throughout), enjoyable episodes, excellent humour and those opening credits are simply phenomenal - one of my all-time favourites, up there with Game of Thrones and the like. Highly recommended, and I look forward to S2.
