Ping Pong the Animation 2014

The ping pong The animation anime team has done something truly amazing. They took a story that would be other wise boring and completely deviated from today's animation standard and made a complete masterpiece in 11 episodes. At first I was very skeptical of how good a sports anime would be with only 11 episodes, but they sure know how to tell a story.

That's the selling point of this anime; the storytelling and execution were incredible.

More than a anime about table tennis, this is a story about change, moving on, giving it your all, friendship, and the hardships that come with them.

Truly a beautiful piece of work.

Recommended to anyone who enjoys all kinds of anime, those people who can see a diamond before it is a diamond.

It's a Masaaki Yuasa adaptation of a Taiyo Matsumoto comic. Two great tastes that taste great together. Incredible animation, great characters, yada yada.

I think the thing I love the most about this, though, is that it's a sports anime that understands that the sports in sports anime are not the important part, it's more about the characters involved and their interactions with each other. The ending is, I think, perfect for this kind of story, and I wish it would show up more often.

A wonderful coming of age story told in a brilliant style. Though simple on the surface, its unconventional structure and realistic characters keep it very engaging. I'm fond of how the sport at hand is used as a common medium through which all the characters express themselves, rather than ping pong itself being the focus of the story. The visual style deserves its own special commendation, if not just for the fact that it presents one sport in so many ways that it never gets dull to look at. It's only 11 episodes, and it tells the story it needs to without being too brief or taking too long.

Turned out to be an awesome series, to nobody's surprise. Even if you have no real interest in Table Tennis (like me), this series is still worth watching. As mentioned in my other shout, it has some great staff behind it and it shows.

The characters are interesting and watching them grow throughout the series in a believable way is very enjoyable. Although the series often resorts to a kind of comic-panel-not-quite-still-frame style for some of it's action pieces, the fully animated parts are very fluid and exciting to watch. Overall just a damn good show. And don't be a snob about the art style, for the love of god. Some people might not like it (I didn't mind it at all), but don't let that put you off watching it - the story and characters more than make up for it.

I'm hovering between giving this one an 8 or a 9. I've rated it 8 for now but it's something I might revisit at some point.

One of the best recent anime I've seen. The art style might make or break it for people, but I feel like it suits the action very well!

Based on the title/subject matter, I wasn't particularly interested, until I saw that this will be by the guy who brought us Tekkonkinkreet (http://trakt.tv/movie/tekkonkinkreet-2007) and will be directed by the guy who, amongst other things, brought us The Tatami Galaxy (http://trakt.tv/show/the-tatami-galaxy).

This will also air in the noitaminA time slot, which admittedly isn't always a measure of quality, but normally does promise at least something a bit different!

I sense potential here!

And here is a trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmZVuMDlw-w
