[7.3/10] What do you know! I actually liked this one reasonably well! Both halves of the episode work.
The standard cyberspace plot was solid. The notion of Megabyte replicant that trick the Guardians into thinking they have a free shot at the fortress to retrieve that video orb instigates things nicely. The ensuing battle between them and the army of Megabytes, with Trey saving the day, is pretty standard, but perfectly good. And the growing tension between Megabyte and the Sourcerer, while the Department of Internet Security is slowly onto what’s happening, does a nice job at gesturing toward something bigger going down eventually.
I also liked the meatspace plot as well. As rote as it is, Trey’s (seemingly military) dad not approving of the time he spends with “the video game bunch,” Trey wondering where his friends are at the big game, and Austin helping out Trey with a (true) excuse for his dad were all done well enough to pass muster. The basketball scenes were shot well, and as convenient as it was for Trey to score the game-winning basket (the 4-point play thing was cringeworthy) and for his dad to accept his excuse, it worked well enough for this show’s admittedly low standards.
The only thing I’m skeptical of is the reveal that the guardians bleed the equivalent of red code in cyberspace, which is somehow enough for Megabyte and the Sourcerer to determine that the guardians are human, but I suppose that’s a little churlish to complain about in a show that takes science and computers as unseriously as this one does.
Overall, one of the better episodes of the show thus far, which granted, isn’t saying much, but still.
