Watched a number of sketches from this one to cap off my watch of Twin Peaks, and it was tons of fun. MacLachlan fits in wonderfully in a cast of ringers like Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey, and Chris Rock. There were some nice Twin Peaks riffs, including the monologue where he claims to have spoiled the ending and the sketch which serves as a direct (and hilarious) parody.
But Kyle did just as well in the non-Twin Peaks material. His "Killing Floor" song makes me wonder if Conan O'Brien or one of the other SNL writers who migrated over to The Simpsons borrowed the same idea for "Lisa the Vegetarian." Seeing MacLachlan go brogue-for-brogue with Myers in the "All Things Scottish" was a hilarious and absurd sketch that was pure Myers sensibility. And so help me god, hearing the conviction with which MacLachlan delivered his "bite my butt" lines in the 2 Live Crew sketch was a guffah all its own. Throw in Carvey doing his reliable George H.W. Bush impression and his crazy old man routine, and you have some classic comedy that both serves as a time capsule of 1990, shows a great performer doing comedy with alacrity, and displays a show running at the top of its game in the midst of one of its creative peaks. Definitely recommended.
