[5.2/10] This was pretty bad. About the only thing that keeps it from sinking any lower is a few laughs in the Alexis/Ted segment. Otherwise, I’m not sure I chuckled once in this thing, and it’s rare that the show has stinkers across the board like this.
Even the Alexis and Ted story was pretty weak. There’s some decent comedy concepts to the notion of Alexis doing a terrible job of looking after things for David. The childhood resentment that goes back to a set of Tamagotchis is amusing, and Ted being terrible at roleplaying generated the only real laughs in this one. But it was an undercooked subplot, and the conclusion that they manage to wreck David’s bathroom is more sitcom zaniness.
If you want sitcom zaniness, though, check in with David’s storyline. The prospect of David-imitating doppelgangers, replete with knockoff luxury goods, was really lame and cheesy. There’s a lot of Roland to this plot, which is never a good sign. And while I like the return of Wendy, the details of her life, obliviousness, and the situation as a whole is so cartoonish that the whole thing just feels utterly ridiculous, and not in a good way.
Last but not least, the story of Johnny and Moira accidentally running over a cat and having to break the news to a local, rustic family has potential, but it was just totally laughless. This is another story where nobody involved acts like a human being rather than a wacky T.V. character. There should at least be some good cringe humor here, but instead the whole thing is weirdly detached, which is an odd mode to go for when you’re trying to go broad comedy.
Overall, this is a real dud. Usually even the worst episodes of Schitt’s Creek have one good storyline. This one had half of one at most.
