Oh, man. I saw comments saying the acting was bad, but I was hoping people were exaggerating. I am a little less than a minute and a half into this first episode, I'm already rolling my eyes. These three actors don't feel like they're family AT ALL. I mean, the kid is trying, but this scene is so scripted and unrealistic that it feels like a bunch of strangers trying to act like a family in the most cliche' way they could think of.
"I swear to you on my own life, I'll never let them hurt my baby." Dramatic music and close-up I'm sorry, am I supposed to be taking this seriously? Come on, Netflix. You can do better than this.
What is with these parents letting their kids do whatever they want? Ruby just runs out of a car to a stranger's car, and her grandmother acts like it's no big deal. Serena gets to decide if she's going to do her homework or not and can just sneak out without any consequences whatsoever. Oh, and I completely buy that an 8-year-old would just hand over her favorite backpack to some girl she just met. Can't believe I'm a third of the way into this and still haven't found anything positive to say. It's a shame they had to drag Ellen Harvelle into this.
The show tried hard to be mysterious and dramatic with the "everything is connected" scene, but it just came off as random. Actually, I think with a more serious tone by the actors and directors and with more suspense music throughout, that scene could have been a good place to START the episode.
Okay, I've found a positive. That scene with Rico running out was humorous. The issue is that it doesn't belong in a show that SHOULD have a darker tone, given what's about to happen to Serena (based on the description).
It's sad that it took a child dying for this episode to finally pick up. The last 15 minutes were actually decent. I hope what someone said on the homepage about it getting better after this episode is true. The show has potential; it'll just all come down to the writers, actors, and directors to pull it off...
