[5.5/10] Well this was a dull outing. The melodrama between Peter and MJ has been one of the show’s weaknesses, and something it treats totally inconsistently, and founding an episode on it, with a convenient and cliched love triangle with a local news researcher, did nothing to right the ship. Poor Lisa Loeb isn’t necessarily up to vocal emoting necessary to make things work here, and the writing does her no favors.

The fights with the generic trio of flying former KGB agents is not as nearly awesome as it sounds. Things devolve into a generic hostage situation that’s more an excuse for Peter to flirt with his new love interest than to do any truly interesting Spider-Man stuff. I’ll give props to the episode for having the villains deploy a legitimately clever plan, distracting Spidey with the hostage situation so that they can go break into the safe they tried to get into in the episode’s opening. But the resolution leaves plenty to be desired.

Overall, it’s discouraging when an episode this weak is penned by one of the show’s creators and main creative voices.
