The 80's background was the highlight of the series for me. It is a good sci-fi coming of age adventure of sorts, but just good. My main complaint is that it failed to deliver any originality to the genre or media, and just kept spitting out reference after reference, as if it's the only way to prove you know your stuff. I hope it doesn't get a second season, an anthology would be just fine, as most of the answerable questions were already answered, the others shouldn't have to be fully explained, or we'll end up with another Lost here.
E.T. and Super 8 meets a Stephen King story equels one of the best new shows to binge watch on Netflix.
I honestly can't get over how good this show was. Started out on a whim Saturday night and binge watched the entire series in two sittings. I was hooked from the get go. From the synth-y soundtrack, to the Stephen King meets Goonies storyline, everything about this show is truly gripping and enjoyable to watch. If not a huge success, Stranger Things is surely a modern day cult classic.
As an 80s baby, this series feeds into so many loves of mine, it's perfectly perfect.
I'm a 90's kid, not a big fan of Stephen King or Spielberg, but I still enjoyed the heck of it. You'll sympathize immediately with the boys and all the characters, there's almost a element in the story that's gonna keep you interested - a nice combo of fantasy, mystery and suspense that will glue you in from the first minute till the last. Netflix can't fail at this point!
Stranger Things Season 1 set a new bar for how stories should be told. Not a single bad episode, spectacular writing, perfect pacing, awesome visuals and soundtrack. It really was a perfect serial of 8 episodes.
Loved it! I had to do my best to not to binge watch the entire season. It's very Stephen King-y and reminded me of Twin Peaks, Carrie and E.T. I liked the 80's music too. Stranger Things was full of Stephen King references so it's nice extra for King's fans.
Stranger Things is not for everyone though, my boyfriend never made it past first episode.
This show is amazing! The young actors are so talented and bring this interesting, mysterious story to life. The 80s vibe in the show is great, makes it nostalgic to watch. Interesting characters, each bring something to the table but big thumbs up to Millie Bobbie Brown (Eleven) who is truly a very gifted young actress who captured me right from the start.
I was always on edge and never dissapointed, can't wait to see season 2 next year!
Even though it's not one of his stories this is very much 1980's Stephen King done right (with a healthy side order of John Carpenter and Lovecraft) . Kids as the main characters, strange goings on, slightly stereotypical characters (Stand by Me, hello!) but done to almost perfection. An excellent season and very watchable.
Season 2? Very likely I guess and somehow I think El will still be around which may something else comes back.
Very far fetched but just managed to keep my interest . 6/10.
Stranger things Season 1 is more mystery than it is horror. The show is very good at revealing just enough to keep you invested. There are many cliff hangers here that can make it difficult to wait to watch the next episode. Also the Lovecraft vibes are real, and I love it.
If mystery is your thing you gotta check this show out!
These were great beginning episodes.
okay fine, this show is actually good. well-paced solid character writing suspenseful mystery. it's all solid writing through and through. my literal only complaint is Mike and Eleven's "romance" but it would take the moon and the stars to get me invested in the romance between two 12-year-olds so I don't even hold it against them tbh.
We live for the 80’s vibe and yet those vibes don’t distract from a very well told story consisting of great acting, hair raising suspense, a lot of heart & amazing attention to detail. A true one of a kind smash hit. Can’t be duplicated or recycled, and nobody fucks with Eleven!
Cozy and wholesome horror—possibly one of my favorite subgenres. This has all the makings of a comfort watch.
binge-watched this at dawn and finished it the same day. I WAS IN AWE OF EVERYTHING :exploding_head::exploding_head::exploding_head: i dont even know what to say—it's fascinating, brilliant, and absorbing the entire time !!!!!!!!!
i freaking love this show. thank you, k, for introducing it to me :))) usap na tayo ulit please charot!!!
Almost as good as I remembered. The kids are great, they're fun and Milly Bobby Brown in particular is fantastic in this role but I think I'm in the minority when I say that for me the best characters were Joyce and Hopper.
Following Hopper working this case was very entertaining and David Harbour is very charismatic in the role. Winona Ryder plays the desperate mother SO well, Joyce's scenes always felt like a gutpunch, such good acting and writing!
The characters in general were the best part in this. Despite their different personalities and flaws everyone is likeable. Everyone coming together in the second last episode was so satisfying and a blast to watch.
It's not a masterpiece for me tho, I have some nitpicks; The bad guys could have used some more substance, sometimes it feels like our leads have crazy plot armour and the sixth episode was kinda meh. But otherwise a very enjoyable and well made season carried by its cool characters.
an instant classic. this season borders on perfection, this whole 80s vibe, the inspiration in classics of the time, the references, seriously, amazing, the script well tied and a photograph not unique but perfect. the performances impress, especially children who look like humans and not child models. Winona is a great actress, she goes through all the pain of a mother who lost her child, in fact all the characters are well written and well interpreted. the whole "mythology" of the series is very good, the attention the Duffers got makes it all fall into place in the end.
On 181220, after finishing season 1 the shield, i am here. I watch series season by season. So, i will stay here for one season.
I was watching sitcoms and police series for a long time so i wanted to break it. I need some mystery and fantastic things.
I copied this from series review. I will copy this to also first episode review.
Normally, i try to watch old series. Like 1993-2010 years but i wanted to see that. I hope i enjoy it.
I will edit here maybe in future after finishing some episodes.
EDIT ON 181220 AFTER EPISODE 1
Episode was nice. It reminded me twin peaks series also. And a little x-files :)
Seeing mirkwood from LOTR was nice.
EDIT ON 191220 AFTER EPISODE 3
This series are showing 1980s-90s. When i saw he-man cartoon at tv, it came to my mind suddenly! No cellphones, no new designed computers.
Lots of unanswered questions and i like it :)
EDIT ON 191220 AFTER EPISODE 4
Jim is reminding me fox mulder from x-files more and more every episode
Without fear, he went directly to that center of research. He also lost his relative like fox mulder.
In previous episodes, i had guessed it could be another dimension. I did not expect such dark dimension.
EDIT ON 201220 AFTER EPISODE 5
It is still mystery why monsters come to our dimension and how they are so clever to go back.
80s and they cant tweet when they see a monster or cant take photos instantly. Really hard days :)
EDIT ON 201220 AFTER EPISODE 6
I remembered where I remember officer powell from. Rob Morgan from daredevil. Also he was in other marvel series like iron fist, jessica jones, the defenders, luke cage abd punisher as turk.
EDIT ON 211220 AFTER SEASON FINALE
The season ended in a sad way.
Did the monster deserve to be killed? I dont know. It came to earth with the greediness of humans. Its source code is to kill. I wish they sent it back to the dimension only.
Now only monster was killed. But gates are still open. There are maybe small parts of it. Like inside will. He did not want to tell about it. It is nonsense.
They did not show barbara's family or funeral. She died because of nancy but she is ok with it. Nancy forced her to come because.
Chief gave a promise to them. Despite the ones who i thought superiors of that organisation were killed, chief hopper did something with them.
I think eleven did not die. We will see.
I give 8 / 10 for the season. I really like it.
Those kids know LOTR but not from movies. There were not movies of it at that time. They know from books.
They know and play Dungeons & Dragons. They know science, politics. Lots of things.
They use bikes. They have a good friendship.
The topic is not so original maybe but it is good to watch.
Now i will move to another series because i watch series season by season.
The single most overhyped show I have yet seen.
They air FOUR seasons of THIS, but NOT EVEN A SECOND ONE of Marianne?
Bullshit.
While many have detracted the heavy 80s nostalgia in the series, none of the homages felt derivative or gratuitous to me. If anything, the show managed to borrow and combine ideas from the past, convert and renew the old tropes, and craft its own identity.
Well any series that could generate interest to the internet generation to actually watch the films and series that this show makes homage to (especially John Carpenter / Stephen King/ Spielberg films) should be applauded even if the programme itself ain't especially original or unique. David Harbour got his deserved breakthrough role though and Winona is finally back but it is the new kids that steal scenes.
Stranger Things is a fresh and exciting Netflix series that homages ‘80s horror. In Season 1 a 12-year-old boy named Will Byers mysteriously disappears, leading his friends to band together to find him, and during their search they run across a girl with telekinetic powers who claims that Will has crossed over into an alternative dimension called the Upside Down; meanwhile the sheriff uncovers a government conspiracy to cover up Byers’ disappearance. Set in 1983, the show plays on ‘80s nostalgia extremely well; looking and feeling exactly like a horror film straight out of the 1980s (it even makes references to such ‘80s classics as The Thing, Evil Dead, Cujo, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Poltergeist). Also, the performances are really quite impressive; especially the child actors, who are incredibly charming and charismatic. Extraordinarily smart and well-crafted, Stranger Things delivers a remarkable first season.
Wow, I mean Wow.
Duffer Brothers made something special, they nailed this one. It's an original story where they used some inspiration from the '80s pop culture. This show feels like it was made straight from the '80s that just only been remastered in High Definition, all the things you can think and remember from '80s can be seen and feel if you watch this show. The acting performances of those kids and the chief was one of the assets of this show. Even the design of the "thing" was pretty cool and original. I'm late for the hype of this show, and I can see why this show is beloved by so many people around the world. And I'm giving this season 10/10, I hope the other seasons will be great or even better (hoping it's better than season 1) at least the same as the level of this first season.
My favorite characters so far are the Chief and Dustin(toothless kid).
This show also gives me the adorable and cutest kiss I've ever seen since I started watching T.V. (You can see that kiss in the last episode of this season).
The Duffer brothers could potentially expand this universe by setting a story (spinoff) where it's set in our modern society like 2015 or new place where it's still in'80s to introduce a whole new set of characters to the story and maybe do some avengers plot in the future projects.
This season is a total waste of time. Holes in the plot, a lot of unanswered questions, silly characters and poorly designed antagonists.
I can understand when some moments are not explained regarding the fantasy world or superpowers, because this is a genre of mysticism and science fiction, but not to explain the actions and motives of the characters, this is completely different.
Examples (with spoilers):
1. What is the point that Hawkins’s lab brought Jim (the chief) back home instead of killing him? They thought he had a partner who would report to the press? They could just fake his suicide, because he seems to be an alcoholic who mourned very much for his daughter. In any case, there should be at least some explanation why they let him go and not kill him.
2. How does Jim scatter everyone like a superhero?
3. Nancy and Jonathan in the woods. The last thing you will do when you see a bloody hollow in a tree is to climb into it.
4. Hawking's lab just let Joyce and Jim go to Upside Down, because they said that they will never talk about it after. Seriously? If they just hoped that they would die there, they could have killed them for sure.
And there are many more such moments, it's just what I remember from the last episodes.
As a result, the plot is not only about the 80s, It's also as poorly designed, as if made in the 80s.
I finally managed to convince my wife that she would love it and that it's not too scary for her, so I'm doing a rewatch while she's watching it for the first time. In going back after season three, apart from the fun of seeing the young actors as little kids again, it's amazing to see how different the vibe was. This is really dark, desperate, and there are almost no laughs, just a few smiles. I'm not against the evolution they decided for, I'm just noticing how different it is. Anyway, season 1 is still really, really good, even though of course the tension is not the same, knowing nobody is really at risk.
I love this serial.I can't wait to third season.
Great season!!!!! The beginning was great, but the middle slow it down a bit. But starting from episode 7, the season was perfect! My favorite characters in this season were Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Hopper, Joyce and Jonathan. Eleven is the greatest character of this series so far. I loved the setting in 80's. It looked like a Stephen king movie in 80' and I loved the scenarios and the feel fo Hawkins. The soundtrack was amazing, giving me chilling in some scenes. I really had a experience that I was pushed back to 80's. This was in great part due thanks to awesome tracks. I can't wait to listening this sound track in Spotify. Overall, a great season with some slow episodes. But nothing that detracted my experience watching it. The beginning and the last episodes was worthwhile. I really recommended who haven't watched it yet.
Ultimately a phenomenal first season. Great soundtrack, superb visuals, excellent dialogue, and an absolute transportation to what it was like in the 80s! I love it!
Hard not to binge-watch this series. Insanely good to watch, especially with the four different situations happening each episode. Love that the show has a competent sheriff, but hate how easy Nancy was with Steve. I don't like that the writers have her falling for and sleeping with such a shallow asshole. Steve has no redeemable qualities, and his friends are even worse for picking on Jonathan. Really, all I'm asking for is that Nancy be a strong girl who can stand up for herself, not another in a long line of Steve's one-night stands. The fact that she even mentions his history with other girls in an early episode, and that he's presumably 15-16 makes it even more pitiful that she would go for him, knowing she doesn't mean anything more to him than the past girls.
Note: I am only 5 out of 8 eps so far, so if he does grow to love her or whatever, my point still stands that he's a shallow shit that hangs out with assholes who are only interesting in scoring tail. Nancy can do far better. She knows it, I know it, the writers know it -- so quit the bullshit.
so there's this boy who looks like a girl. and then they find a girl who looks like a boy. spookily uncanny ;)
I really, really love this season. Can't wait for the second one.
The whole nodding to the eighties is a bit too heavy at times, especially when it clones scenes, costumes and stuff, but it's a lot less annoying than I feared. That being said, it's a very entertaining show: fun, well written, acted and directed, it uses all the cliches but it also subverts some of them. And thank god it's only 8 episodes, with no fillers at all.
Incredible!
The very good surprise of Summer 2016! Can't wait for Season 2!
Omg, this serie is pretty awesome!
SO SO SO SO SO SO SO SO GOOD!!!!

Stranger Things = E.T. + Carrie + Repulsion + Twin Peaks + A Nightmare on Elm Street + Stand by Me + Under the skin + Alien + Poltergeist.
I liked it, but not a lot. It was like a normal distribution for me. Despite everything, it's very well done. Great job, Netflix.
