Happened to me numerous times over the years - The worst thing happening is sticky keys. Something realistic although stupid is buying laptops where you could spend the same money for a decent multimonitor system, which helps productivity. People should really stop buying laptops for stationary jobs.
Regarding the show itself: Recycling the character is a cheap trick. Especially since there was nothing in the pilot reminding me of the Shannon from Kims Convenience. She could have literally any name or backstory without having to change a single line.
