Finally, after what feels like forever, Ted and co are back!
Very much a setup episode, putting the characters on their respective paths for the season to come.
With Ted finally facing his divorce with the therapist and Rebecca after someone who sets her world on fire, I feel we might find Ted and Rebecca romantically crossing paths after what's shown in this first episode, which will be an interesting dynamic to explore for the rest of the season. Good opener, nothing shocking, just some solid Ted Lasso with some good wit and quips. Can't wait for next week.
[7.3/10] Solid start to the season. Nothing overwhelming, but no dramatic changes or repiloting, just a rough continuation of what the show did in its first year, which has its merits as an approach.
My favorite part of it is the Rebecca story. The idea of her realizing that she wants someone who makes her feel like she’s been struck by lightning and shouldn’t settle for someone who’s simply fine, is a nice beat. The idea of being vulnerable enough to search for that, and getting the advice from Roy of all people, makes for a good miniature journey for her.
Roy’s still not my favorite character on the show, but his and Keeley’s relationship seems downright healthy, which is good for both of them. The idea of him coaching his niece’s soccer team and not being sure what to do next with his life and career gives him cute set pieces and places to go. I also like the hint that he might become a pundit just so he could dumbo on amie, which hey, I’m here for.
Poor Dani ROjas though! He’s my favorite tertiary character on the show. Watching him go from on top of the world to down in the dumps over accidentally killing the team's mascot via a penalty kick is dark and cartoony, but fits his character. The actor does a great job shifting between his various changes in demeanor, and his nightmare about the cartoon dog goalie is a hoot.
I’m not crazy about the bits with Ted and Dr. Sharon though. There’s meat there. I do like the idea that Ted is resistant to therapists because he had a bag experience with one via his marriage counseling. Coach beard’s reminder that all people are different and it’s unfair to paint with a broad brush is a good one. Ted being reluctant, and even a bit jealous, about someone else coming in to look after the well-being of his players is a good way to challenge him.
But I don’t like how they portray Dr. Sharon. Why does she have to be the no-fun police? Why does she have to be so gruff and cold with Ted? Why is she so vocal about being good at her job, and short with everyone else, without us seeing her actually doing any of the work beyond speaking her patients’ native languages. I get that the show needs antagonists. With Rebecca fully on the side of the angels now, you need foils and people to challenge your main characters. But I think there’s an opportunity to show therapists in a good light here, while still challenging Ted’s anxieties about his past and his team, without turning her into such a one-note jerk when she interacts with the main characters.
Overall, a solid kick off to the new season, tie curse and all, which doesn’t reinvent the show in any significant way, but ably carries on from season 1.
Probably the weakest episode of the show up to this point. Uninteresting main plot that somehow gets largely ignored at the same time? It's an odd one.

Breaks my heart to think Roy's needing the good Doc's help when he knows how he makes her feel outside the bedroom.

Love how much I have to learn pop-culturally and multi-culturally from this heartwarming show...so good I'm able to pause and research every single nugget (was gonna say how it's good I'm single and alone, but fuck that).

Honestly there was something off about the first half (or more) of this episode; a lot if the comedy didn't work for me and way too many pop culture references but it got better later on. I hope the writing didn't get weaker overall and it was just a case of premieres finding their footing etc...
Glad to see Roy Kent is as awesome as ever tho!
The song that's being played when Rebecca realises John isn't the one for her, is Aimee Mann's "Wise Up", which originally played a big part in "Magnolia", the 1999 movie from director Paul Thomas Anderson, that was mentioned by Ted when he was talking with Dani Rojas earlier in the episode. (Great movie, btw!)

But most of all Ted Lasso is the best show of 2020 and it’s back with the same comedy and drama, with a Paul Thomas Anderson flavour
The football is terrible. In the first season it made sense and was surprisingly and notably well handled, but it's poorly done this time.
Everything else though... Charming and fun!

Nice opening episode for the new season. Dani's such a fun character, im glad the therapist helped him through the trauma of killing a dog. Keeley and Roy are a sweet couple, i hope Roy enjoys his retirement life more though. It was nice seeing Rebecca facing her inner struggle with being closed off to others, not willing to be intimate, after her ex-husband Rupert cheated on her, I hope she'll find someone and be able to have an intimate relationship with them. I feel like Ted is struggling with losing a connection to his team, with the sports therapist showing up, solving the teams's mental issues which he couldnt, and it seems she might be a more permanent character this season. The ending was pretty nice, it seems like Roy and Jamie's relationship is gonna be explored more this season. Also, I hope Richmond will finnaly get a win this new season, maybe a rematch with the team that ended their season too.
I thought it lacked magic at the beginning and wasn't funny until the psychologist showed up. Then things got fun and interesting.
They should avoid to show them all happy and nice to work with each other. The reason season one worked was because there was conflict and change.
Maybe it overstuffs on the pop references metaphors, but it sticks the landing. Hopefully we see also more football this season.
