This show has transcended itself.
[7.6/10] Here’s what I like about The Good Place (among other things) -- it’s a show that does comic book-type stories in a non-comic book setting. Where else but superhero stories and soap opera can you get a tale about someone having to say goodbye to but then reencounter the person they love because if they don’t everyone will be tortured? It’s a unique situation, a thought experiment almost, that nicely teases out where we draw the line between what’s right and important for us personally and what’s right and important for the world.
What I don’t like about The Good Place (among many fewer things) -- is that it anchors that whole idea around the sanctity of a romantic relationship between Eleanor and Chidi that I’m just not as invested in as the show wants me to be. I don’t want to keep beating a dead horse over this point, but it’s hard to ignore when the show centers so much around Cheleanor/Elidi as a romantic pairing, and not buying into them as a couple makes the big emotional moments in a series finale leave you cold (or at least colder than you should).
Kristen Bell and William Jackson Harper do their level best to sell the tragedy of the moment. The episode throws in a clip montage to sell it. And I like how the pair handle it for the most part, with Eleanor being devastated but putting up a tough front, and Chidi being resigned but resilient because he’s convinced they’ll find one another again. It’s a nice balance of optimism and realism in the moment.
The emotion of the scene just doesn't land with me, which is a shame because I love the concept. The episode’s rife with good concepts. Eleanor having to play architect is enjoyable as she fumfers around and realizes better ways their scheme could have gone. Tahani having to deal with a claws-out blogger who tormented her in life and has now joined her in the afterlife is a good setup, and Sean picking non-evil people who nonetheless are giant thorns in the sides of our heroes is a good bit as well. The wrinkle of Simone showing up works for me on a plot level, and Michael freaking out and trying to recover is a strong beat too.
If anything, the episode leaves me more excited for season 4 than I am satisfied with season 3, which was a solid season that, nevertheless, rarely hit the heights of season 2. But there’s promise there, in a reboot that might do more to earn my appreciation for Eleanor/Chidi, that has a great new premise with the new Good Place experiment, and which ends things on a note of nourishing friendship between Eleanor and Janet that I buy wholeheartedly in a way that I don’t with Eleanor’s romantic leanings.
But that’s still good! Eleanor’s epiphany about what “pandemonium” means to hear, and Janet and her commiserating and finding common ground on it, is the strongest moment in the episode. There’s a Coen Bros.-esque “embrace the mystery” message there which, while a bit trite to a viewer like me whose watch list is awash in vaguely-existential shows and movies, is still delivered with aplomb and good writing, and is pretty damn heady stuff for a network sitcom.
Well, maybe I liked this episode more than I thought. Or maybe a nice final note gives you more to latch onto as a fan even if you thought the preceding notes were a bit more hit-or-miss. Or maybe this show has its ups and downs, and keeps me coming back because its world, its charms, it cast, and its ups are so good.
Overall, this season is a step down from the last, and its season finale didn’t quite blow me away, but there’s still plenty here to enjoy, and I expect to be back and unreservedly hyped for season 4 next year.
that was too much for my poor heart to handle :(
Am I the only one who hoped Janet would give Eleanor "42" as The Answer, when she asked for one?
I have an exceedingly bad self image. If I ever decide to do something about that, "I'm a legit snack" is going to be the mantra I repeat to myself to convince me of how attractive I am.
Couldn't Chidi just... go somewhere else for a bit? I found the necessity for this resolution very hand-wavy.
We've already had Chidi lose his memory of her before and he found his way back. It sucks for Eleanor but they didn't need to spend the entire episode wallowing.
It was good not seeing Simone anymore. Why did they have to reuse her. Now I have a premonition: Blah blah, stupid love triangle, blah blah, they have to tell Chidi what's going on or ruin the project.
Michael becoming a helpless dimwit might fit within harmless cute gag territory but I'm not sure how I feel about it continuing. He doesn't have to pay for his past of being a demon every second of every day.
Not to mention this was a season finale that did not feel like a finale.
While season 3 is my least favorite season of The Good Place so far, I still admire how the series pivots and evolves itself season after season.
Much my quibbles for season 3 centers around Eleanor, who in my opinion is criminally underutilized. Kristen Bell is an amazing actress, as noted by perfect comedic timing and great facial expressions on season 1. Season 3 takes far more somber note and our 4 "bad" characters take backstage to let creator Michael Schur evolve the series with more depth and complexity.
While I understand Mr. Schur's intention, I still wish Eleanor showed more sass this season. "I am a legit snack" is the only Eleanor sass I recollect hearing this season.
I suppose in many ways, season 3 is more about Michael and Janet as they investigate and learn the ironies and imperfections in the system.
Optimism at its peak:
“Will you remember pizza?”
“Yes I will remember what pizza is”
“So not all is lost then!”
Will you remember pizza... :joy:
I have no care for Eleanor and Chidi's relationship. NONE
Unfortunately, I was hoping a better finale. The writers rely on the relationship between Eleanor and Chidi as the emotional punch of the episode and somehow, it feels lacking.
Throughout the three seasons of The Good Place, their relationship is the one aspect I believe they haven’t developed properly. Although that montage near the end is quite touching, it feels somewhat forced as a reminder of something that should already be in the back of our heads. not sure if I’m making sense
Another aspect that feels kinda forced is the death of Simone... Unless Shawn had something to do with it, that could be a decent twist, I think.
I would say that the scene between Eleanor and Janet by the end was the true highlight, summing up this episode and season overall.
Season 4 is on it’s way and it is all that matters!
Edit: Upon rewatching the series from the beginning, I still believe this episode is quite underwhelming, especially for a season finale. However, after seeing Cheleanor in a new light, I feel obligated to correct myself from the previous comment. My formal opinion is that they are absolute cutest and that video was adorbs. I might have shed a tear by the end of it.
Although season one was pretty much iconic, I think this season is my favourite one. It had the most turns and twists, the biggest character development (without reboots at least) and some sweet major revelations.
Good set up for the next season, but I'm over all this relationship drama...
~SF16~
I really don't know how this show managed transform itself from fun thing to almost a drama. I love this third season and I'm hoping for even better one.
As expected, Eleanor filled in for Michael as the Architect and she nailed it like a motherforker!
My heart is broken for Chidi and Eleanor, though...
...But it's even more broken for the episode, itself, because this was clearly a filler episode and only after coming here I realised (and I was almost shocked) that it was a season finale. This has got to be one of the worst season finales I've ever seen. Ending a season on such a low note and devoid of any hype for the next one (we already had Chidi and Eleanor with their memories wiped out in the past but love conquers all in the end, etc.) because they opted for a filler episode seems terribly awkward. Also, if this was supposed to be the build up for the next season, I feel no excitement about it whatsoever. Is the show finally losing its pizzazz? I guess we'll see it later this year... Fingers crossed that the next season will put the "good" back into The Good Place.
I adore this show. It might be the most wildly imaginative series I’ve ever watched.
But am I the only one feeling zero chemistry between Chidi and Eleanor?
Somehow, this silly comedy with a ridiculous premise managed to get into a position where it could pull of these heartbreaking scenes.
Yeah, we haven't seen a ton of these two people as couple, but I think we have seen enough hints at what happened in the couple of centuries unseen that it still works.
devastatingly beautiful, what an impeccable show!!
Nice show, big cliffhanger on this finale. Not happy about it.
Great show. Also: They have to be still inside of a complicated, new version of the bad place.

The part near the end, Janet explaining the meaning of life. How amongst the chaos, when you find love it makes it so much more special. That was phenomenal. This show is amazing.
