[7.2/10] I liked the substance-based theme of this one, and it never hurts to have Will Forte in tow. I will say that I didn’t love seeing the main characters trying to make an alcoholic relapse, but I’ve at least semi-made my peace that the members of The League are mostly terrible people and the show somehow expects us to like them for it.
I enjoyed Kevin and Jenny’s story, where they try to buy weed via Taco, are too suburban and awkward to know how to do it, and freak out when they end up with cocaine instead. Again, there’s an ever-so-slightly more down to earth quality to the two of them and their issues when they’re together, which helps. Taco’s “going anti-natural” routine was a fun flip on everyone else tripping on something, and his apartment-based shenanigans with the testy landlord were good for a chuckle.
But the funniest part of the episode was Ruxin being high. There’s a “Dwight Schrute” with a concussion quality to seeing this normally uptight jerk of a character being loosey goosey and easy going. His scene dancing for Taco’s landlady, while Taco can’t help but beatbox for him, was a comic highlight of the show so far. For once, the ridiculousness served the show well, and Andre’s distress at the whole thing helped take some of the edge off.
I can’t say I loved the standard contrived coincidence of Andre mistaking cocaine for confectioners sugar, but the results were enjoyable. Will Forte was a pro, and his little speeches about “sitting in gum” were amusing. And everyone freaking out on coke gave this group a chance to overact and have it work, which serves their talents well. I can’t say I loved the whole reverse-intervention thing or Forte’s character’s relapse, but on the whole, the comic mayhem worked better than for other episodes.
Overall, a highlight episodes with questionable values but some solid laughs.
