Considering the high ratings of some reviewers - I persisted.
But a messy plot (albeit with strong sub-stories) combined with the trendy ending that doesn't answer any questions means I won't be investing more time in this series. Disappointing.
Wow, this show is just the pits
The. Best. Show. Ever. Made.
I watched the first season when it aired, and thought it was a muddled mess, but based on the recommendation of friends I gave it another try, and I'm so glad I did. Season 2 the show really starts to find its footing, and pace. Another commenter mentioned the "trendy ending that doesn't answer any questions"; to that I have to say what more questions could you possibly want answered? I thought the "ending was BRILLIANT".
The entire show is about the extremes that humans will go to assign meaning to random events. There is no providence, there is no master plan, there is no destiny, and if you believe otherwise, then yes, you WILL be disappointed in this series. In the end this show is about the human mind and how it is so very fragile and so fallible; yet it shapes the world around us, and more importantly shapes those around us. We must be careful with sharing our beliefs, because they are contagious, yet in the end my amount to nothing.
words cannot describe how much i love this show, it's perfect in every single way, and it had a fantastic ending
Really good if you don't focus on "What Happened".
To those on the fence, and those who have given up hope. This show has many lessons for you. It takes patience, but pays in dividends.
One of the greatest shows ever made. It's a shame that people need to be spoonfed subtext and themes to understand the point of the show.
One of the best shows I've ever seen! It's completely different from everything else I've watched, hard to describe. You might need to give it some time to get into it. Especially season 2 and 3 are outstanding. And the soundtrack, amazing!
Best show and best soundtrack ever.
Great series. One of the few in the last couple of years. I have the feeling that the quality of tv shows has been declining for some years. And seeing one of the excellent ones ending is pretty sad.
I loved its mood and spiritual creativity from the beginning and it got better from season to season. Honestly I didn't expect it to come to such a great ending but I was pleasantly surprised and loved the last couple of episodes. I loved the characters and felt with them.
The fact that there are a many negative comments here is a sign of quality with a show like that. It's not for everyone. But if you're brave enough to let the show's confusion and themes of uncertainty into your brain you'll be rewarded.
What a trash series! I don't believe I just watched three entire seasons, just to finish without a decent explanation! A completely lost of time.
I slogged through the first season, but couldn’t go farther, being constantly triggered by the apparent inability of the writers to have a line without “f_____”
Heartbreaking, brilliantly acted, directed, scored and written show about loss and living.
Suffered through all 3 seasons - should've given up after the 2nd or 3rd episode in season 1. A part of my life I'll never get back!
The second series is top top quality. I really do not understand all the negative comments about this show, the acting is really good, the story interesting, the narrative compelling, I can't find a negative. It should be a criminal offence if HBO do not make at least one more series, to wrap it up.
Such a poorly paced show which seems pointless. I doubt the world would ever react that way, and those GR guys would get punched a whole lot more!!!
i'm curious why this is so highly rated...? i watched it a few years ago and was like "whatever, i guess it's got some emotion-inducing stuff." but then i rewatched and felt myself cringing at the fact that i wasn't cringing the first time i watched this lol. maybe max richter's original compositions for the show distracted me (though they were way overused)
i'm especially confused as to why the episode "international assassin" is the highest rated episode of the series on IMDB?? that's the episode that gave me the most eyerolls for non-religious related reasons lmao, even my first watch through
i've watched a lot of tv, and i enjoy most of it because i can find genuine enjoyment out of "bad tv" too. but this just gave me too much second-hand embarrassment. i mean, the promo posters alone..
i do see where some people might get enjoyment from watching the show, so no judgement or whatever
I just started season 3. Was expecting a turn for the better. Had suspicions as early as season 2 that this was going to be a crappy religious sham story. This better not going to be some Christian savior BS show. We will have judgement day at the end of the show. 7 episodes to go.
Seriously what did I just watch.. can't believe people are recommending it to those who liked Lost.
The only thing good about this was the actors, they did an amazing job, especially the protagonist.
The premise is interesting but it only manages to keep you engaged for the first episode, other than that the plot is all over the place, just a bunch of crazy people doing crazy things, and the pacing is terrible.
This must be one of the most intense and intriguing series I have ever watched. Season 1 punches you in the face emotionally with the portrayal of the loses that the 98% leftovers feel in the wake of the departed. And the remaining two seasons tells a very intriguing story that is nicely wrapped up in season 3. There are many unanswered questions but that is true of many great novels and this is what The Leftovers is most easily compared to. The acting is wonderful with Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon easily taking the prize for the most compelling acting. Its just a completely wonderful series.
Very Bad Beginning,
mediocre middle,
the worst ending i have ever seen - skipped through half the finale...
Save your time and watch something else...
There are many fine actors in this show which was the reason we started watching it. But it is so dismal. Waiting for something, anything, to happen and nothing does. Will watch the final episode this week and that might be the last for us.
Fuck yes, HBO renewed The Leftovers for a 2nd season!
Boring as hell
overrated show and colossal waste of time. Folks say serial finale was the best, but I'd say it was the worst ever. Even worst than infamous Lost..
i like the story and the twists but the soundtracks are the worst
This show was fun to watch. I sometimes think of watching it again.
An all-timer show, tears are still streaming down my face as I type this out. Never before has a TV show forced me to confront the concept of faith as much as this. Absolutely amazing stuff here.
just let the mystery be
Very annoying color grading. The layer of mystery in plot is sometimes too much and it becomes cringy christian-show like. Anyway it's a very interesing show. Worth watching, I think
Another waste of time. The storyline was all over the place making it difficult to follow. Truth be told, I had my doubts, and I should have followed them.
If it wasn't the best show I have ever watched.
I understood nothing of this show, I like some of the conversations, I do not agree with the assumption that no way can get better and even if the show comes down on religious extremism they end up doing the opposite in the third season.
Considering that the show starts with the trope of "a part of the population goes missing" and it develops from there, I can't really say after watching all 3 seasons that I don't know how they go missing, why they go missing and even if they are dead. The third season was the weirder of them all to me. And besides the ending, all characters end up a fuck up and by that I mean they don't get better at all.
The conversations and talks about grief got me interested, the character development is nice, and acting is really good. Especially Matt who made such a poor job with as a Doctor Who protagonist and the main villain of Thor 2.
And the religious aspect of the show got really confusing because I can't say if it is all real, if they are hallucinating it all or that whatever.
Huge let down, looked a really good series but it's far from it.
great ending. Not at all what I expected but great none the less. One of my top 10 shows of all time.
My favourite show of all time.
One of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
One of the best shows I have ever seen
It's definitely the best Tv Show I have ever seen !! It's fascinating bu also confused, many feelings about this Tv Show. The actors are really great, they are really convincing. Thank you HBO, Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta !!!
Man I'm so chilled for this coming back.
The writing and performances were top notch. The choice of songs were brilliant as well. The score by Max Richter is terrific which is a huge plus. The show is about how the characters are dealing with the unexplainable tragedy rather than how it happened or why. So if you're interested only in how or why, then you'll be disappointed or even frustrated. If you want a character driven show and watch how these people are doing, you'll love this. Easily the best new drama of this year IMO. So glad it's coming back next year.
Like almost every good, deep and thoughtful show it takes time and patience to have an emotional impect.
You people have no attention span.
Boring as hell! I'll give it a couple more episodes to redeem itself, then it will be a farewell.
I found the pilot icky enough to decide not to watch any more.
Yup a bit messy even for a pilot.
I'll give a go one or two episodes more
I love the first episode. I think this show has a lot of promise.
I didn't got the story at all, it just seemed all really messy.
Some what great story. About grief and all the circumstances put in. Great acting and great 2 seasons. But couldn’t make sense for over all what the story and plot was meant to be. Anyways was a fair solid series for me. Would give a 6 outta 10.
This is a show that feels like a fever dream.
The Leftovers is one of HBO's best works from its wonderful introduction (first season) to the exploration of the loss and humanity of its characters, a series that takes risks with a different proposal. Unclassifiable and undervalued.
In love with this show :orange_heart:
Probably one of the best shows I have ever watched. And can't believe I took this long to watch it
it's like a christian twin peaks
<>.
(david Foster Wallace)
I gave this show a shot, after 2 episodes it failed to hook me.. maybe it gets better but i don't see why i should force myself in to it
definitely the best show ive ever seen
Great show, great acting performances, I'll miss it.
Should of been a blockbuster series but it's just a huge blockbuster flop.
I just finished season one of three, and have been told season 2 is better yet. This story, from the creators of LOST, is a slow burn, so commit to the long haul. Before I began watching, I read the viewers feedback comments, and the best advice was, forget about what happened, or the why or how of it. Those who wanted those questions answered hated the series, those who invested in the story curve of the characters, and how they chose to repond, discover the appeal of the series, and gave it rave reviews. I settled in to giving it an 8.5 out of 10, with a 10 for the penultimate episode (1.9) and a 9.5 for the season finale. What I enjoyed was the performances. This has a stellar cast, with some promising newcomers. Carrie Coon was a new name to me, but attracked awards for her work in the series.
Until the episode "International Assassin" I hadn't decided where to sit with this show. It was certainly "different" in a not annoying or tacky way, but I felt the inspiration perhaps too on the nose. And here I find my empty derivative floosy opinion spiraling away on the quiet poignant poise of putting something so sweetly on your nose.
Underrated series. This is just amazing. Season 2 is a blast!
I have seen two episodes and I don't understand where the plot is going, I'll stick for a few more just because I'm intrigued.
This show has the best soundtrack of any show I've ever watched, whoever is in charge of selecting music for the episodes needs a huge raise! Every single episode has at least one great song (not including either season 1 or 2's themes, both fantastic) per episode!
What a beautiful mindfuck!!!! Love it!!!!

This is an incredible show, and my current favorite of the ones airing right now.
I've enjoyed it so far. I am really hoping they don't pull a "Lost" because the show has a lot of potential. The variations of piano music played throughout the episode is extremely well done. Liv Tyler is surprisingly good as well.
Un petit chef d'œuvre cette série ! Le thème musical est un bijou. Bravo encore à HBO
I love the show so far ,though too gloomy sometimes ! The acting "Justin Theroux" is superb in my opinion , also the story lines are entertaining and well written.
Epic Show with an amazing finale
À SLAP !! Very good show !
really enjoying this, its a change from the usual formula most shows follow i just hope hbo doesnt bin it because of the "boring as hell crowd"
People need to give this show a chance, but of course that won't happen. I just hope HBO does.
Who don't knows what will be left behind will never get true plot of the show. It's not about what is said, it's about it isn't. The whole world is the Remnant (or leftovers in a dog bag), only on the Guilt Remnant the caos make sense.
dont know why this show is getting so much hate...2 episodes in I am really enjoying...yes it is weird but cant wait to see where the storyline goes

Heh its from the creator of Lost.. So without even watching it I know it's gonna suck ! Don't wanna see another show only filled with flashbacks and cliffhangers but no good story.
At first I thought that was Leighton Meester, but it's someone else!

A fantastic different show.
