After seeing the commercials, I was looking forward to checking this show out since it looked bananas and I have a weakness for bad reality competition shows. The concept is really fun, but the execution leaves much to be desired and the show ended up being entertaining for all the wrong reasons. I made it through the entire season after resorting to fast forwarding through much of the judges' inane commentary (although I enjoyed contributions from guest panelists Joel McHale and Kenan Thompson). The ratings are fairly strong, and I'm very interested to see the numbers for the finale.
Since the show has already been renewed for another season, I have some suggestions for the future: 1) Make the show an event and air a shortened season over the course of one or two weeks, max. The internet seized upon this show after the first episode and had most if not all of the singers identified immediately. Why not capitalize on that initial burst of excitement? This would make the show must-watch live TV for viewers to play along and keep the competition from getting stale over many weeks. 2) Look into some new judges. Although I have no issues with Nicole Scherzinger, she didn't make much of an impression. I don't care for Robin Thicke, but he did some surprisingly good detective work by picking up on some physical cues that helped him guess correctly a couple of times. Ken Jeong is only amusing in small doses and was largely unfunny here. And Jenny McCarthy, UGH. Referring to her as a pop culture guru is quite a stretch. Most annoying judge EVER.
