The only other David Simon show I've seen is The Deuce, but I already feel he excels more in that ambling, characters-and-details-over-plot mode (which I presume most of his works are) than this kind of faithful book adaptation. It creates a constant push-and-pull between diving into religion/politics/period minutia and forward narrative momentum, doing either no favor in the set-up episodes. As this alternative scenario gets grimmer though, the show becomes more gripping with each terrifying and realistic new step taken, leading to a great (and distressingly not that far-fetched) finale of overwhelming, potent apocalyptic doom.
MVP: Zoe Kazan. There's a long zoom-in shot of her on the phone, with intermittent sound of gunshots ringing nearby as background, that absolutely floors me with her mixed expressions of shuddering fear and resolute maternal strength.
