It's weird that "Big House Blues" is the actual pilot episode but shows up in Season 2. It's decidedly different than the rest of the shorts because it seems kind of choppy. There are no real extended gags. It's still funny but Ren and Stimpy don't have their personalities established, especially Stimpy. That's understandable obviously since this is the pilot, after all. The plot of this cartoon is really heavy. We're talking about the dog pound and "the Big Sleep". I think what I enjoy most about this one is the sound effects. There's all kinds of background whimpering, laughing and mumbling to be heard. It reminded me of a lot of the old Fleischer Popeye cartoons in that way.
