This was one hell of an episode (pun intended). I wasn't sure about the Lucifer bit (Lucifer was a male character in the comics) but it was well personified. After the Constantine crap they pulled i must say that this one was on point
I really want to love this show, it has a lot of potential, but something just feels off.
The whole John storyline just feels very dull and generic, and Dream himself is kinda boring. I kinda liked what they were doing with the fight/challenge in Hell, but if we're being honest, it was kinda dumb. Why would Lucifer even start by saying "I am a direwolf" if she could have just said she was one of the better things right away? After that challenge happens once, it would never have to happen again because they'd very quickly find what can't be beaten. The little pep talk the raven gave Dream took me right out of the scene too - really not liking the voice actor at all.
Last thing I wanna say is that I feel that the show is constantly trying to have these sort of 'epic' moments. They have nice visuals and great music to create these moments. But the problem is, these moments haven't been earned. They fail to actually be epic or memorable because none of the characters are overly strong and we haven't had much reason to like any of them. The only character I've seen anyone really caring about was the female Constantine last episode - but it doesn't seem like she's going to be a big part of the show other than that one episode.
The show isn't bad, it's entertaining and an alright watch. But certain things in the writing are just preventing it from going from okay to good/great. Not sure if that's just because of the source material, or if it's because Netflix messed something up.
Not knowing the comics it took me some episodes to get a grip on this universe, but oh my this is really good. The fight between Dream and Lucifer was so creative and cool. I wasn't familiar with Tom Sturridge, but his voice is freaking mesmerizing.
I don't know how I feel about Patton Oswalt as the Matthew.
John's storyline is a good one, excited to see how it ends up next episode
That fight was meaningless. Dream just needed to say “I’m God, your father!”, Lucifer would have gone ballistic, Hell would have exploded with its King secluded in rehab for half eternity!!
Seriously, I like this show, but mostly for its visuals. The story is ok, the cast is great. It has some great moments, just the fight wasn’t one of them.
From strength to strength. The special effects team nail blending with reality and the vibe maintains. Can barely stop watching
There's moments of this show that have me putting it in my top shows of the year - it's that damn good. And others where I'm scratching my head. I'm still conflicted on the leads performance, whether it's just limited by character or by acting ability. I've never been a big Gwendoline Christie fan, but when her casting as Lucifer was announced, I was excited - thinking it a bold choice. I'm not so sure it paid off - though I did enjoy the climatic moments with Morpheus (more due to editing and score than anything). David Thewlis, whilst a good actor, feels like he plays the same character in every big budget production. I'm expecting him to rise into the air and scream that he's Ares, the God of War.
Lastly - maybe it's due to lack of focus, but I don't know what any of the special items actually do, other than the Protection necklace. Someone mentions the Ruby make dreams come true, but has the sand not being doing that as well? Some clarity would be greatly appreciated. Maybe it's me though.
So a few problems but I'm gladly going to follow this. I also definitely want to pick up Sandman issues - despite trying and not liking the comic series initially. So overall that's a win.
What destroys hope? It isn’t further explained but my first take on it was, that the one thing that would kill hope is despair, and Lucifer can’t say they’re despair, because despair is Dream’s sibling and another Endless. There'd be protocols there that made it impossible to change into an entity like that.
And ah, that last line to Lucifer was just... so deep. It hit home.
And another tiny fact that I loved in this episode, is their difference in size. Lucifer is huge, towering, threatening to look at. And yet, Dream, seemingly tiny below them, staring up with such menace in his eyes, any giant would have crumbled. /That/ is strength. Sheesh.
Emotionally, that is my level of emotional satisfaction, I'd give it a seven...but, visually & what other characters' brought to it, it's a nine...so, split the difference and I landed on an eight out of ten.
I used to believe, "What Dreams May Come," was a visually stunning representation of Dante's map into Hell, but, this broke MY map of what was possible. And, freaking royalty, BRIENNE OF TARTH?! (OMG)
The creators have a story to tell... decisions had to be made... choices that may or may not please everyone. I'll respect their vision and continue on.... the show has a unique spirit and deserves to be finished off.
Gwendoline! I love the living landscape of hell and this portrayal of Lucifer. The duel of transformation came out beautifully.
Some minor changes from the comic in this one too but so far so good, like Lucifer themselves fighting Morpheus was a good away to give more screentime to Gwendoline. And of course there's John Dee not killing Rosemary, when John killed her it had an impact on me, but I kinda like the fact that this Rosemary didn't die, she was a bit more likeable than the original one plus it kinda fits well with Dream's decision about John Dee later too.
Did Rosemary truly survive, and with that nifty protection amulet for herself, to boot?
The gas station scene was so stupid. Who calls 911 in front of the person that might be suspicious. Wait for them to leave & get their direction / plates.
L: What power have dreams in Hell?
M: You say I have no power here. Perhaps you speak truly. But to say dreams have no power in Hell… Tell me, Lucifer Morningstar, what power would Hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to dream… of Heaven?
L: Che potere hanno i sogni all’Inferno?
Why bright red liquid pouring out of Morning Star's castle? Seriously. It's cartoonish.
A female Lucifer? And a really boring one at that. And that "fight"? Ridiculous! What the fuck? This Hollywood bullshit ruins every bloody series these days.
Of course, the black scene is a hell scene.
WTF is wrong with Lucifer? What kind of fight was that! Demons got attitude!
gwendoline wasn't as great as i thought she would be as lucifer. she's good tho. hell was greatly made and the suspense was on point.
I’ve never read the comics, and I don’t lack imagination, but the ‘battle’ was pure cringe to me. I’m sorry my beloved Gwen, you did what you could!
John's drama was too much, the half of the story was about him amd the road trip to the ruby drama and that wasn't necessary at all, also the actress that played Lucifer was a pure choice from the director and dream the man itself i came to the realization that this isn't about dream as a lord it's about dream itself as dreaming how dreams struggle to survive through all the darkness and nightmares how weak dreams could get to and how lightning dreams are.

Patton Oswald was such a bad choice for Matthew
