The Sopranos: Season 1

1x04 Meadowlands

I'm completely in love. I mean, I was already hooked at Paulie grumbling in the coffee shop from the second episode, but this episode is just fantastic. And although I'm only four episodes in, that little wink at the end that Tony gives his son just absolutely kills me. Great stuff.

There's one thing I don't like about this show: when the gangsters talk they are caught in the The Godfather. It's a big stereotype. In every other situation these men are regular men but it's painful to watch them imitate characters from the movies they know. I guess it's a deliberate choice: the writers want to emphasize the difference between their private life and their professional life, but this fake Italian masculinity is painful to watch nonetheless.

The story about the boy learning of his family background is told beautifully. I always wondered how that works. I guess just like that: one day you'll find out and you'll get used to it. There won't be an official introduction the family business.

This feels like one of these episodes where you know it's gonna take off and be a great series.
