I was expecting to love this but found it entirely meh. Don't like the suit at all. In fact wasn't fussed on Tick himself, felt like he was trying way to hard.
Disappointing.
For me this did everything right that many other shows and movies get wrong, mostly to do with establishing the backstory, showing just enough for the audience to understand what's going on without frontloading everything with unnecessary and premature drama. It unfolds the backstory naturally, with proper effect, not spoiling it or asking too much of the audience to care about someone's flashback before you know enough to care anything about them.
I also watched the second episode right after this, but was perfectly happy with the pilot.
Arthur (Griffin Newman) is a young adult that has mostly gone through his life with mental issues, mostly due to a trauma. We get to experience both through flashbacks of Arthur and conversations with his sister, Dot (Valerie Curry). It's a surprisingly interesting way to kick off the new series and focus on Arthur instead of the titular character, The Tick. Brash, boisterious and ready to rumble, the Tick is represented perfectly by Peter Serafinowicz. He offers an intriguing take on the insect-based superhero which also shows off that he's crazy nuts.
On the down-side there are some breaks in the pilot and times where the episode slows down, which could've easily been filled with jokes here and there. In these 30 minutes we get to see a lot of Arthur as a person, but it's not enough time to show us how he fits in the picture at the moment (or in the future). The pilot showed us who Arthur is, as a person, but how is he going to make it as a superhero? Newman fits the role, but with this current dynamic I'm not sure he fits in the duo, being easily overshadowed by Serafinowicz.
The episode is however, very promising and I'm definitely interested in the rest of Part 1 of this season. As soon as The Tick appears on-screen we get a very bonkers and off-kilter vibe that throws everything that happened before (or after) for a loop.

Fun and quite well done although I found this didn't really differentiate itself from other superhero shows as much as the originals. This gets better after the pilot but still lacks the character, quirkyness, expression and wonderful quotes of the originals. if you like this and haven't seen the original live action do yourself a favour and avoid it till at least series end. lt out performs this overall and may make this less enjoyable. Really excited to have the tick back and hope the show grows in confidence. looking forward to the second half.

I am happy to report that the Tick gets way better after this test pilot. The costume is better and every line is pretty much hilarious. Definitely stick with the show after this just okay episode.
