"The Howling Man" is a great tale with some excellent performances. It's a frightening look into man's inability to control the world, even when his intentions are good. The opening shot of character David Ellington forced to tell his tale of terror is perfect. An out-of-focus frame zooms out from the exhausted face of Ellington as lightning cracks behind him. He settles in to tell his unfortunate tale, speaking directly to the camera.

John Carradine plays Brother Jerome as a half-mad, 20th century Moses. The transition of the prisoner into the Devil is very creative. The ending is near perfect as Ellington's maid repeats his mistake and the camera peeks into the room where evil is lurking. Douglas Heyes does an amazing job of directing, check out the titled, disoriented angles that follow Ellington's character around as he stumbles ill through the old castle.
