Gillian Anderson's acting was really good in this episode.
While i do like since it happened in season 2 and its been explored, that of Scully's abduction being either by the government or aliens or a mix of both or them working together, i do not like how unresolved it is. In trying to give evidence to many theories, you end up short changing them, and making less sense. You spread the possible logic and evidence too thin. Too vague, and i want solid answers.
I do like the tying in with the black oil and a vaccine, and with mentions of a timetable in regard to the possible colonization. I like those solid kind of answers. But i don't know if this all makes sense. And keep in mind, i've been binge watching the show a lot lately. I was watching tons of episodes a day almost, and yet still i was quickly and often lost on the mythology as it continued to get more convoluted. Imagine the people watching this as it aired, or those who are taking their time watching the show, i can't imagine how lost they or the difficulty in trying to piece together the over-arching narrative and mythos. Although since the episodes were so spread out back again and with a break after each season, they would have more time to try and piece things together and come up with theories, but the fans shouldn't be doing the job of the writers. Fans and non-fans can have good ideas, but the writer/creators should have the most responsibility.
I do like the drama of Mulder becoming paranoid about government conspiracies. He has been played with and lied to so many times. Even in season 1 when they were chasing a truck that was said to have a UFO or alien body and their car got stopped by a bright light and they fell momentarily unconscious or something. It looked like aliens did it, but it was quickly revealed to be that government/convert group that did that to them in order to transport the body to another vehicle, showing the kind of technology this group possessed and how far they were willing to go to cover things up.
But it doesn't make sense how he's completely closed off to aliens now, not after all he's seen. Not with how much he knows and has seen the government trying to cover up alien acitivies and phenomena. The creators have changed Mulder like this to be more dramatic and show a shift in character and a slight reversing the roles of Mulder and Scully. It's interesting, sure, but it doesn't make sense. Even off the top of my head there's the encounters with Deep Throat and what Mulder learned from him, there's his run ins with the black oil and the alien bounty hunter. There's the experiments with alien and human dna. Some of it could have been manufactured to be a government lie, but not all of it, and the government/secret groups wouldn't and maybe even couldn't go so far as to manufacture some or a lot of the things he's seen and experienced, so this change in Mulder doesn't make sense.
I like Krychek and the woman are an item, it lends more sense as to how Krychek is still alive and even had some kind of authority over some troops or something. It doesn't really make sense but it gives some sense at least. I don't think the writers intended this connection either, as if i'm doing the work for them, but i'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this point.
So the reason why the eyes and mouth are sown shut is to prevent black oil from getting out? What about the ears or other orifices? Or why isn't the oil engineered to be thinner or to eventually melt the skin so it can get out or something...
The alien bounty hunter is back but also sowed up? But can't he change shape? Why is there multiple of them on the bridge? Are these not the alien bounty hunters? The actor just looked similar?
They have Cassandra Spender in order to possibly help rejuvanate Mulder's belief in aliens, and to further give evidence of alien involvement in Scully's abduction to help further her belief, and at the same time create even more confusion about who did the experiment on Scully.
It is interesting, what's going on, i just wish things were more clear. Maybe they will be after the second part, about who or what are putting people/former "abductees" on fire, and why they are on the bridge.
I don't exactly know what to make of this episode. It's focused in it's narrative, but in regards to the larger mythos arc it feels a bit haphazard.
I think it might be contingent on the second part.
The return of black oil, Krychek, and the battle for and against human colonization by the Colonists (Purity), the Rebels and a benevolent intelligence.
Secondary characters in this episode: Krycek, Bounty Hunter, Agent Spender, Well-Manicured Man, Syndicate, Marita Covarrubius

I wonder if we'd ever get to Skully becoming a believer.
