I think that the 1st episode of "Trese" is a good example of the type of 1st episodes that I don't like. It wasn't bad, but it definitely threw me off a bunch of times. It doesn't hold back even a little bit and just goes straight for the story and characters. It's the kind of episode that doesn't let the viewer immerse itself into the story, characters or world. It doesn't wait for you to grasp things or even explain much. And I think that what annoyed me even more was the fact that it was a murder mystery episode, based on events and a culture that I have no link to/knowledge of. The only thing I got was a voice over in the beginning that really didn't help much. Things got easier as the episode went on, sure, but that feeling of confusion and disappointment never left.

A ghost has been killed. Wait, what ? Aren't ghost already dead ? Yet we literally start with a ghost's corpse. And the police doesn't seem to have much of an issue with that.
Interesting setting, a lot of folklore I'm not really familiar with. The visual style is stunning (not so much the character design, but all the rest).
A good start.
