[7.0/10] This episode had a real Wizard of Oz vibe to it, with Spider-Man and his motley crew of allies going to a far off land and receiving gifts and life lessons from a benevolent stranger. It’s a solid conceit, and it’s a thrill to once again get to see Spider-Man interacting with the Avengers crew (not to mention making good on Thor’s frog story), but this one comes off lackluster, if not bad.
For one thing, the whole “you all need to overcome your weakness” speech from Eitri comes off really rushed and overcooked, since we spend way more time with Spidey & Co. fighting Frost Giants and such than really showing weakness. Plus, his plan to defeat Loki with words is Comic Book 101 for beating prideful villains and so lacks any novelty or zing. Thor’s also a little closer to his stentorian comic book incarnation than the somewhat more human version I’m used to from the Marvel movies, which makes him ring a little false to me here (through no fault of the show).
There is some fun to be had from cross-pollinating the Ultimate Spider-Man gang and the usual players from Asgaard. And there’s a solid payoff to Peter’s “I hate field trips” bit. But overall, this one was good enough but somewhat underwhelming given the ideas and settings at guest characters at play.
