Ultra Q: Season 1

1x25 The Devil Child

Continuing to watch these in production order. "The Devil Child" was the third episode produced, but didn't air until 25, as all the non-daikaiju episodes were held so they could frontload the series with more spectacle. It's also not that good of an episode with a muddled story about a little girl whose stage magician dad has hypnotized her to sleep one too many times, so she's developed a sinister astral projection self that goes out into the world and frightens people, often in fatal ways, so she can swipe some little trinket from them like earrings or a ring (so much for one of the comic relief rival journalists from the second episode!). It's still moodily directed, and I applaud the ambition of some of the tracking shots involving the spectral overlay of the girl, but the story drowns in pseudoscience about psychic electricity, just aimlessly does stuff until abruptly ending, and continues to not sell our team as interesting leads for us to be following.

Well, I guess you can't arrest a soul.

A little girl who needs to be hypnotized to sleep, sends out her "devil" ghost while she is sleeping. The ghost kills travelers in the mountains, which is where the ghost haunts, looking for her deceased mother. The Ultra Q team uses some ultrasonic device to merge the ghost girl with her body as the girl is walking in the path of an oncoming train. They save her at the last moment. This is so convoluted it's hard to watch. It was interesting that the DVD states before the episode that it was restored from original recordings that were not in the best condition.
